Verizon HTC Droid DNA name crops up again

Android Central

The story of Verizon and HTC’s Droid DNA has led us from a nameless blurry-cam, through rumors of an “HTC DLX” to clear photos of the actual device and news of what appears to be the final branding. The 5-inch, 1080p smartphone, known in Japan as the HTC J Butterfly, looks set to become a major launch for Big Red later in the year.

Today brings further confirmation of the Droid DNA moniker, as the “HTC Droid DNA” name has appeared on a Verizon support page listing devices with non-removable batteries. Alongside the name is the ADR6435 name previously associated with the “DLX” codename. If you've been following this device, you'll remember we first broke news of the Droid DNA name a few weeks back, when we spotted it on a leaked Verizon MAP document.

So barring some last-minute change, it’s probably a safe bet at this point that the DLX will come to market as the Droid DNA. Verizon folks -- anyone thinking of skipping the current crop of phones in favor of a shiny new DNA? Let us know in the comments.

Publishing Perspectives - National Association of Memoir Writers ...

?

?

Kamy Wicoff and I, Brooke Warner,?are thrilled to have the opportunity to speak this coming Friday, November 2, at NAMW?s Fall Telesummit about publishing, and the changing face of publishing. How timely, given the news that the merger between Random House and Penguin is official, and last week?s announcement that Simon & Schuster is restructuring its adult publishing division. ?

Kamy and I bring two distinct perspectives to the call?she as an author-turned-entrepreneur who?d had the kind of tough experiences with traditional publishing that tend to turn authors onto self-publishing; me as a publishing veteran who?d been witnessing the changes to the industry with optimism rather than the sky-is-falling attitude common among many of my colleagues.

Kamy?s vision for SheWrites.com, which she founded in 2009 with Deborah Siegel, was to create a community of women writers supporting one another. What a dream! And what a success! Today, SheWrites.com boasts well over 20,000 members. This summer, on the third anniversary of She Writes, we launched She Writes Press, to provide women writers with a publishing option that gives them the freedom, control, and financial rewards of investing in their own books up front, without sacrificing the credibility and status that comes with publishing under a highly selective imprint.

Kamy and I feel that the momentum and action in book publishing is not with the traditional presses. We are excited about the possibilities for She Writes Press, but also about the shake-up in traditional publishing in general. As traditional publishers take fewer and fewer risks, more authors will be freed up to make decisions that are best for their books and their readers. One of our goals is to contribute in a positive way to the changes already being seen in self-publishing, and to offer women writers a new platform and the promise of a successful publishing experience.

No matter where you enter into the publishing equation, it?s important to know your options, and to check your expectations. We hope we can provide you some perspective, and talk to you about why we are so passionate about community and building a platform for women writers.

Most American UAS Openly Broadcast Secret Video Feeds | UAS ...

Four years after discovering that militants were tapping into UAS video feeds, the U.S. military still hasn?t secured the transmissions of more than half of its fleet of Predator and Reapers, Danger Room has learned.

The majority of the aircraft still broadcast their classified video streams ?in the clear? ? without encryption. With a minimal amount of equipment and know-how, militants can see what America?s UAS see.

?If somebody could obtain reliable access to real-time Predator or Reaper video ? without attribution or alerting U.S. military ? that would ?a tremendous intel coup,? says Micah Zenko, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. ?There is an insatiable demand from Predator and Reaper imagery in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Any reluctance to use those for spying or missile strikes places operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia at some risk.?

Military officials have known about ? and mostly shrugged off ? the vulnerability since the development of the Predator in the 1990s. But the problem drew increased attention?in 2008, when UAS video footage was?found on the laptops of Shi?ite militants in Iraq, who were able to intercept the feed using a piece of $26 software. The Pentagon and the defence industry assured the public that they?d close the hole by retrofitting the robotic aircraft with new communications protocols and encrypted transceivers that would keep the video from being intercepted again.

Four years into the effort, however, only ?30 to 50 percent? of America?s Predators and Reapers are using fully encrypted transmissions, a source familiar with the retrofitting effort tells Danger Room. The total fleet won?t see its communications secured until 2014. This source and others who work closely with drone operations say that drones flying overseas are among the first to get the newly secured equipment. They also noted that they are unaware of any incidents of militants using America?s unmanned eyes in the sky to their advantage. ?But I?m surprised I haven?t,? the source adds. ?And that doesn?t mean it?s not happening.?

This isn?t the only vulnerability in the UAS fleet. In March of 2011, an unknown software glitch caused a Predator?stationed at a U.S. base in?Africa to?start its engine without human direction.?Last October, as Danger Room first reported, Air Force technicians discovered a?virus infecting the drones? remote cockpits in Las Vegas. It took?weeks of sustained effort to clean up the machines. The aircraft, which rely on GPS to guide them through the air, can run into problems if GPS signals are jammed in a particular area ? something that can be done with cheap, commercially available hardware.?Iranian officials claimed they hacked the GPS control signal of an advanced UAS, though it?s?impossible to verify that lofty claim.

No one who works with UAS is questioning the fundamental integrity of the UAS fleet at the moment; it would take an incredibly sophisticated hacker to?commandeer?a Predator, for example. Nor is anyone pretending that this premiere tool of the U.S.global ?counterterror campaign is flawless.

Predators and the larger, better-armed Reapers transmit video and accept instructions in one of two ways. The first is via satellite, to remote pilots and sensor operators who are often on the other side of the planet; these satellite communications are encrypted, and are generally considered secure.

The second is through a radio frequency signal called the Common Data Link, which is used to share the aircraft?s video feed with troops on the ground. The CDL?s carrier signal ? its specific pattern of frequencies, in a given order and for a given length of time ? tells both transmitter and receiver on how to function. The problem is that the Predators? version of the CDL carrier signal (also known as a ?waveform?) didn?t include an order to encrypt the signal. So neither the transmitter on the UAS nor the receivers that troops used on the ground employed encryption, either.

There were reasons for this.?The original Predator, just 27 feet long, was little more than a scaled-up model plane with an 85-horsepower engine. It had a payload of just half a ton for all its fuel, cameras and radios. And encryption systems can be heavy. (Big crypto boxes?are a major reason the Army?s futuristic universal radio ended up being too bulky for combat, for example.) With the early Predator models, the Air Force made the conscious decision to leave off the crypto.

The flying branch was well aware of the risk. ?Depending on the theater of operation and hostile electronic combat systems present, the threat to the UAS could range from negligible with only a potential of signal intercept for detection purpose, to an active jamming effort made against an operating, unencrypted UAS,??the Air Force reported in 1996. ?The link characteristics of the baseline Predator system could be vulnerable to corruption of down links data or hostile data insertions.?

The Predator models steadily grew in power and payload, and took a big leap in dimensions and capability with the 36-foot-long Reaper version introduced in 2007. The Reaper has a 950-horsepower engine and a nearly 4,000-pound payload ? more than enough capacity for crypto-enabled systems which, like all electronics, had shrunk in size and weight.

The problem was that, by then, the military had?rushed to the battlefield hundreds of?Remotely Operated Video Enhanced Receivers, or?Rovers ? rugged, laptop-sized receivers with screens for watching drone footage. And those early version of the Rovers were developed and distributed so fast, the military once again left the crypto off. ?It could be both intercepted (e.g., hacked into) and jammed,? e-mails an Air Force officer with knowledge of the program.

Which mean the Pentagon was stuck, for a time. The military couldn?t replace the old CDL waveform with something encryptable until the Rovers ? and the radio transmitters aboard the Predators ? could handle such a signal.

Eventually, the Rovers began to be swapped out for newer models. The latest version, the ?Tactical Rover,? (.pdf) is about the size of an old-school mobile phone. It can use both the?Advanced Encryption Standard an the triple-Data Encryption Standard to secure video feeds. There are now about a thousand of the units in the military?s hands.

And now, the Predators and Reapers are starting to get enhanced radios, too. ?The fleet-wide upgrade begins later this year and carries on for several years,? says Major Mary Danner-Jones, an Air Force spokesperson. The service is spending $12 million on crypto-enabled?Vortex transceivers (.pdf).

That?s allowing a new, hardened waveform to be introduced throughout the Predator and Reaper fleet. The Air Force recently gave Predator-maker General Atomics Aeronautical Systems?a?$26 million contract to retrofit its cockpits to accept the carrier signal, among other enhancements.

The question is why hasn?t this happened sooner. After all,?the Navy installed multiple layers of encryption in their ?bots some time ago. Navy spokesman Jamie Cosgrove tells Danger Room that ?the vast majority? of naval UAS are encrypted ?? ?and have been since development.?

One source who works on developing Navy UAS, but is not authorized the speak on the record, explains why:??Standard unencrypted video is basically a broadcast to whoever can figure out the right carrier frequency, so essentially, we are simulcasting to battlefield commanders and the opposing force. If that opposing force knows we can see them and from where, they can take better evasive maneuvers.?

It?s possible that none of the militants America is trying today are as sophisticated as the ones who intercepted that UAS video in 2008. It?s possible that the value of such footage-from-above is so fleeting that extremists have never again bothered to grab it. But it?s worth noting that Predator and Reaper video is considered by the U.S. military to be classified information. And when U.S. commanders on the ground get into a firefight, the first call they usually make is for a UAS, so they can take a look at the battlefield through the eyes of a UAS.

(AP) ? The big storm taking aim at the East Coast a little more than a week before the election has scrambled campaign plans, with both candidates canceling events and President Barack Obama moving up his departure for Florida to beat the storm.

In an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy has forced Obama and Republican Mitt Romney to toss out carefully mapped-out itineraries as the candidates work to maximize voter turnout while avoiding any suggestion they were putting politics ahead of public safety. Romney canceled plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to join running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio.

"The storm will throw havoc into the race," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said on "Fox News Sunday," noting that a Monday rally with Obama and former President Bill Clinton has already been canceled.

David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign, said it was impossible to predict how the storm would affect the election but acknowledged it could drive down turnout to Obama's detriment.

"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," Axelrod said on CNN's "State of the Union." ''And so, to the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."

On Saturday, Romney was in Florida speaking of bipartisanship, while Obama tried to nail down New Hampshire's four electoral votes.

The former Massachusetts governor presented himself as a staunch conservative during the Republican primaries but has struck a more moderate tone as he appeals for support from women and independent voters. He promised to "build bridges" with Democrats.

Romney coupled his message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision.

Obama, heading to Florida on Sunday night rather than Monday as first planned, spoke with volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester, N.H., on Saturday. "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

Winning the White House takes 270 electoral votes. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that remain too close to call.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees when he led Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama said.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four of the most competitive states: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama canceled appearances in Prince William County, Va., on Monday, and Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday so he could monitor Hurricane Sandy.

He moved the departure for Florida to beat the storm and planned a Monday stop in Youngstown, Ohio, before returning to Washington.

Instead of campaigning in Virginia as scheduled, Romney was set to join Ryan for three stops of his Ohio bus tour. Romney's trip to Florida was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns. But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland.

Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. The Republican nominees, Biden said, "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

Giants blow 23-point lead, but win 29-24 at Dallas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Eli Manning stood on the New York Giants' sideline in disbelief when it looked as if the Dallas Cowboys had scored a go-ahead touchdown with 10 seconds left.

What was encouraging is what he didn't see: a replay on the giant videoboard that hangs above the field at Cowboys Stadium, where the Giants still have never lost following a wild 29-24 victory Sunday.

Officials reviewed and overturned Dez Bryant's apparent 37-yard touchdown catch, ruling his hand hit out of bounds, and the Cowboys couldn't get into the end zone after the overturned reception.

"I couldn't quite believe they were able to hit a touchdown in that situation. I kind of kept looking for the replay," Manning said. "You know the game was not going to be over until that clock hit zero."

This was the 20th time in Manning's career that the Giants rallied in the fourth quarter to win. And this comeback came after New York blew an early 23-0 lead.

"It speaks about our resiliency. We know how to win these games," receiver Victor Cruz said. "We've been in a bunch of them."

After their sixth win in seven games since a season-opening home loss to Dallas, the Giants (6-2) hurriedly cleared out of Cowboys Stadium trying to get home as quickly as possible with Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the East Coast.

The Giants are 4-0 in Arlington since Jerry Jones' football palace opened in 2009 with a New York victory.

"I'm very disappointed right now," Jones said. "I thought after all that, our defense played well enough, our offense kept going and I thought we were going to get a chance to pull one out."

Coupled with Sunday losses by Philadelphia (3-4) and Washington (3-5), the Giants strengthened their hold on the NFC East lead halfway through their schedule.

New York led 23-0 just 2 minutes into the second quarter when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown. That was the third of four interceptions thrown by Tony Romo, and Dallas (3-4) finished with six turnovers.

But the Giants didn't score again until Lawrence Tynes made a 43-yard field goal with 10:20 left for a 26-24 lead. He kicked a 37-yarder with 3? minutes remaining in the fourth for his fifth of the game.

Stevie Brown set up Tynes' last field goal with a fumble recovery and also had two interceptions.

"We have good leadership, good people," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "They're fighters in that locker room. ... Sometimes it comes out differently than it was designed."

Dallas got to the Giants 19 on one of its last drives. On fourth-and-1 with 1:03 left, Romo scrambled and was picked off by Brown.

After New York failed to get a first down on three running plays and Dallas used all three of its timeouts, the Cowboys got the ball back with 44 seconds left at the 30. They got to the Giants 37 before Bryant's catch between two defenders in the back of the end zone was overturned.

"We scratched and scraped," Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty said. "At the end, we still had to have a little luck to pull that one out."

Manning completed 15 of 29 passes for 192 yards with an interception.

Romo threw for a career-high 437 yards while completing 36 of 62 passes. Jason Witten broke his own Cowboys team record with 18 catches, which resulted in 167 yards. Miles Austin had nine catches for 133 yards and Bryant had five catches for 110 yards.

The Giants led 13-0 in the first quarter after Romo's first two interceptions.

Brown, who has five interceptions in six games, stepped in front of Bryant and had a 37-yard return to set up Tynes' 37-yard kick that made it 6-0. Three plays later, Corey Webster's 37-yard interception return led to Andre Brown's 1-yard TD.

Michael Coe recovered at the Dallas 15 when Bryant fumbled after fielding a punt over his head, setting up a 26-yard field goal.

Three plays later, Pierre-Paul broke off a block and jumped to grab the ball. He punctuated his first-ever pick and touchdown by dunking the ball over the crossbar.

Things were so bad then that Jones was booed when he came on the videoboard during a public service announcement about breast cancer awareness. On another unrelated video during that same timeout, coach Jason Garrett got the same treatment when his image appeared on the screen.

"I've been to boo school so to speak," Jones said. "Seriously. I'm sure the fans had the same feeling I did. I was frustrated, mad and knew that we had dug ourselves a hole that was going to take super effort to get out of."

Dallas scored the last 10 points of the half, then added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to go ahead. Romo faked a handoff and rolled right for a 1-yard score on fourth down, ending the play with an emphatic spike.

After the Giants went three-and-out, the Cowboys drove to the 1 again. Romo faked another handoff and started rolling right, when he then shuffled the ball ahead to John Phillips for a 1-yard pass that put Dallas up 24-23.

None of that mattered after the closing sequence.

"Just tough when you think you've won the game," Romo said. "It switches as that moment. You put a lot into it, obviously. We put a week's worth (of emotion) in that one game.

NOTES: The only Cowboys with more passing yards in a game are Don Meredith (460 in November 1963) and Troy Aikman (455 in November 1998). ... The only other time Dallas had three 100-yard receivers was Nov. 10, 1963, at San Francisco. ... Tynes is now the second-leading scorer in Giants history. His 17 points Sunday pushed his career total to 535 (113 field goals, 196 extra points). He passed Brad Daluiso's 526 points. The career leader is Pete Gogolak's 646.

Serena Williams wins WTA title, ends year No. 3

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 Sunday to win the WTA Championships for the third time and finish the year with another title, but not the top ranking.

Williams ended the year with a 59-4 record. Since her first-round loss at the French Open, she is 31-1, winning Wimbledon, the Olympic gold medal and the U.S. Open.

The 31-year-old Williams became the oldest player to capture the year-end championships. She won seven titles this year.

"Now that I can be honest, I really wanted to win," Williams said. "I wanted it so bad but I didn't want to say it. ... It was really important for me to end the year with this title in particular."

But she will finish the year ranked No. 3, behind No. 1 Victoria Azarenka and No. 2 Sharapova, because she did not play as well in the first half of the year. Azarenka lost to Sharapova in the semifinals.

"I had such a good year, it was important to end on a good note," Williams said. "It was good for my sanity to win. I really wanted it although I didn't need it."

In 2001 and '09 Williams also won the elite, year-end tournament that brings together the top eight players.

A fist-pumping Williams closed the first set with an ace, one of 11 she had in the match. The American broke serve to start the second and was never threatened again. Williams hit a powerful return on her first match point. She finished with 40 winners to Sharapova's 13.

"Today she had another great serving day against me," said Sharapova, who never had a break point.

Williams finished the tournament without dropping a set. She also beat Azarenka in round-robin play, one of her four wins against the No. 1 this year.

"If I'm playing well and doing everything right, it's pretty difficult to beat me, without trying to sound too full of myself," Williams said. "And I hate to lose."

She has won 12 straight against opponents ranked No. 1 or No. 2 and has not lost to a player ranked in the top 2 since 2007.

Williams was not her powerful self early in the year following injuries and illness. Shortly after winning Wimbledon two years ago, she cut her foot on glass at a restaurant, leading to a series of health problems, including hospitalization for blood clots in her lungs. She also injured her ankle at the start of the year in Brisbane, Australia.

Williams last finished the year as No. 1 in 2009. She has held the No. 1 ranking for 123 weeks.

(AP Photo/The Oshkosh Northwestern, Joe Sienkiewicz) NO SALES

(AP) ? With an eye on the weather forecast, President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are launching a 10-day sprint to the finish line in a contest increasingly about momentum vs. math.

A huge storm barreling toward the East Coast ? and some battleground states ? had both campaigns adjusting their travel schedules and canceling events. Even at this critical juncture of the campaign, neither side wanted to risk the appearance of putting politics ahead of public safety.

The president was pressing on with a campaign trip Saturday to New Hampshire, while Romney was blitzing through Florida.

But an email announcing that Vice President Joe Biden's Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., stated that the change was "being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm."

Romney canceled a rally in Virginia Beach that was planned for Sunday, and aides said they were also considering scrapping two other events elsewhere in the state. None of Obama's campaign stops had been canceled, but he did adjust his travel schedule slightly. The campaign moved up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm.

Ten days from Election Day, Obama and Romney are tied nationally. But the president still appears to have more pathways to reaching the required 270 Electoral College votes.

The Obama campaign released a new TV ad Saturday urging Americans when they go into the voting booth to consider Romney's plans to roll back Wall Street reforms, transform Medicare into a voucher-like system and reduce spending on education while at the same time cutting taxes for the rich. The spot will air in Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia, all key battleground states.

The Republican nominee is trying to seize the momentum mantle and turn a wave of GOP enthusiasm into an electoral victory.

"The debates have supercharged our campaign and the Republican team," Romney's campaign wrote in a fundraising email. "We're seeing more and more enthusiasm ? and more and more support."

Obama's campaign pressed forward with a get-out-the-vote effort that aides said had them leading or tied in every competitive state. The president was eschewing the lofty rhetoric of his 2008 run in favor of warning supporters that skipping out on voting could cost him the election.

"In 2000, Gore vs. Bush, 537 votes changed the direction of history in a profound way and the same thing could happen," Obama said in an interview Friday with MTV.

Romney was switching his attention to Florida on Saturday after spending much of the week focused on shoring up support in Ohio. While the Midwestern swing state could be crucial to Romney's re-election prospects, he also faces tremendous pressure to carry Florida, which offers 29 Electoral College votes, the most of any swing state.

Obama carried Florida by just 3 percentage points in 2008 and polls show the candidates tied.

The former Massachusetts governor was scheduled to attend three rallies, the first in Pensacola along the state's conservative Panhandle. He then moves to suburban Orlando before finishing his day with an evening rally just outside of Tampa, the site of the Republican National Convention. Romney was to be joined at all three events by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Soccer star, pop diva run in Ukraine's election

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? An extravagantly dressed pop diva, a retired football star, the son of a famous actor, an opposition leader suspiciously cozy with the government. Meet some members of the eclectic cast running in Sunday's parliamentary election in Ukraine.

Ukrainian political parties have brought in celebrities or even created fake opposition in an effort to boost their ratings and split their rivals' vote. Such tactics raise questions about Ukraine's commitment to democracy and its hopes of integrating with the West.

The two main pro-Western opposition parties hope to challenge President Viktor Yanukovych's nearly three-year grip on power. They aim to wrestle the parliamentary majority away from his Party of Regions and undo actions that have been judged undemocratic by the West, such as the imprisonment of charismatic former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

The Party of Regions has tried to raise its profile by offering the No. 2 spot on its candidate list to pop diva Taisia Povaliy, which guarantees her a seat in Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. The 47-year-old blonde, who wears low-cut, floor-length gowns and sings about the pain of lost love, acknowledges that politics had never been her calling.

"I never thought that I would run for parliament, I never planned it. And then I discovered that people ? the people themselves ? want me to represent them," Povaliy said on a TV celebrity gossip program. "What difference does it make if I work on stage or in the Verkhovna Rada?"

Another party running for parliament, called Ukraine Forward and led by former Tymoshenko ally Natalia Korolevska, is widely believed to be supported by the ruling party and aimed at siphoning off opposition votes. Korolevska, a 37-year-old businesswoman turned politician, was ousted from Tymoshenko's party this spring after she refused to support a motion calling for the jailed leader's release.

She went on to found her own party, hoping to attract Tymoshenko's voters looking for an attractive and pro-Western female leader. But even though she denies any links to the government and calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Korolevska gets so much airtime on government-friendly television channels that she is viewed as a tool of Yanukovych's campaign.

To lead her party's candidate list, Korolevska brought in retired football star Andriy Shevchenko and actor Ostap Stupka, the less illustrious son of late renowned actor Bohdan Stupka. Giant billboards of her and the two celebrities went up along streets and roads.

Shevchenko, the 36-year-old striker known as Sheva, is extremely popular in Ukraine, but many wonder how he would make the transition to lawmaker.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Shevchenko said he planned to concentrate on sports and health issues in parliament and cited the poor athletic condition of many Ukrainian school students as one of the top problems in the country.

"What has Ukraine come to? Today, 70 percent of children cannot do a simple set of physical exercises," Shevchenko said.

Andreas Umland, a political scientist at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, said the use of such tricks known here as "political technologies" are corrupting the political process in this former Soviet republic.

"Obviously, the readiness to manipulate politics with all sorts of dubious strategies is high, and includes the active use of politically incompetent, but famous figures," Umland said. "Political technology is a concept unknown in the West."

And the celebrities are only happy to oblige. It seems that many of them run for parliament motivated more by the perks and parliamentary immunity enjoyed by Ukrainian lawmakers than a desire to the serve the nation ? a trend manifested by the fact that scores of legislators routinely ditch parliament sessions and allow colleagues to vote for them.

World boxing champion Vitali Klitshcko, 40, is also running for parliament, but he has years of political experience and a record of challenging Yanukovych's party in the Kiev city council "like a burr under the saddle," as he puts it. With the charismatic Tymoshenko in prison, his Udar (Punch) party has gained popularity in recent months and is running neck-and-neck with Tymoshenko's party. The two parties' failure to join forces plays into the hands of Yanukovych.

The extremely tall and muscular Klitshchko says that competing on Ukraine's political arena, with its dirty tricks and below-the-belt punches, can be harder than fighting in the boxing ring.

"We have declared a fight for Ukraine and we will win it!" he told hundreds of cheering supporters at a campaign rally in Kiev last week.

With the campaign almost over, pollsters say that the use of celebrities has largely failed to sway Ukrainian voters. Korolevska's party is now less popular than before taking on Shevchenko, prompting her to replace posters showing him and Stupka, the actor, with just her face.

"This demonstrates the stupidity of our politicians," said Iryna Bekeshkina, head of the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, a polling agency. "At the end of the day our voter, of course, is still far away from being rational, but still he is not that stupid."

Street Racing is Cause of Deadliest U.S. Vehicular Accidents ...

(U.S. Law and generally) Speeding is the number two cause of U.S. traffic fatalities, second only to DUIs, and over 725,000 people will be injured each year as a result of a speeding driver. Street racing, sometimes referred to as drag racing, might not be the cause of a lot of these fatalities, but it has been the cause of some of the deadliest speeding related accidents in U.S. history.

Why is Street Racing so Deadly?

Most drivers who are involved in a street race will accelerate past the 100 mph mark, and this makes it extremely difficult for them to control their vehicles. Another very dangerous aspect of street racing is that it often takes places in areas that are heavily populated. Instead of going to a more rural area where the risk of injuring someone who is not involved in the race would be minimized, most street races are intentionally held in urban areas. Regardless of whether it is the thrill of getting caught or the addition of several obstacles, such as other cars, that causes this to happen, each willing participant in an urban street race is knowingly putting the lives of other people in danger.

The Deadly Consequences of Street Racing

There are countless examples of street racing gone wrong; one recent tragic accident took place in Miami, where one of the participants of a three car drag race lost control of his Toyota Scion after exceeding 100 mph. Alejandro Hernandez, the driver of the Scion, was thrown from his vehicle as a result of crashing into a Ford Expedition. Hernandez and two of the passengers in the Expedition were rushed to the hospital and listed in critical condition. The tragic accident also claimed the lives of two of the four family members who were in the Expedition, including a 15-year-old, and the 19-year-old passenger of the Scion.

This accident is a prime example of how quickly things can go wrong when drivers decide to participate in a street race. There is no amount of thrill seeking that can justify killing three people and seriously injuring two others, and Hernandez will have to deal with? the legal ramifications of all of these issues if he is able to recover from his own serious injuries. The fact that he was participating in a street race when he crashed his car is going to definitely be a major issue during his trial, and he will be charged with reckless driving in addition to a long list of other charges.

The Annual Death Toll

Although it is estimated that only 135 people die each year as a result of street racing, these are all deaths that are completely avoidable. According to our Miami car accident attorney, it is extremely common for the drivers to end up dying as a result of their participation in an illegal street race, but incidents such as the one in Miami also occur every year. It is tragic to consider that another driver can be completely following the rules of the road and have their life ended by the actions of an irresponsible street racer, but that is exactly what happens several times a year.

If you are tempted to participate in a street race, you should very carefully consider all of the potential consequences. After all, a couple of minutes of fun are never worth the risk of either dying or spending the rest of your life in jail.

After you?ve been hurt in a car accident, you likely have a lot of questions?and you shouldn?t always count on the insurance company to tell you the entire truth about what you?re owed.? It?s always better to let an attorney explain your rights and options to you.

ExxonMobil executive killed in Belgium

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Belgian authorities are seeking the public's help in solving the killing of an executive for ExxonMobil, the world's largest oil company, who was shot to death in front of his wife nearly two weeks ago on a street in a suburb of the Belgian capital of Brussels.

Nicholas Mockford, a British national, was shot on Oct. 14 as he left an Italian restaurant in Neder-over-Heembeek. Belgian authorities declined to provide information on the crime at the time, which they said was common in investigations of serious crimes, although a Dutch-language television station aired a report the day after the shooting.

A spokesman for ExxonMobil said Friday that the company was "shocked by the very tragic death." Mockford had a long career with ExxonMobil, the spokesman said.

A Belgian police report made public Thursday said Mockford and his wife, Mary, were walking toward their car when a man threatened Mrs. Mockford, hit her in the face several times, and tried to grab her purse. Suddenly, a second man appeared and fired four shots at Mockford, who died on the spot, the report said. The assailants, who were wearing motorcycle helmets, initially escaped on foot but were later seen on a motorcycle, according to the report.

Shortly before the attack, a white van crossed the couple's path. Investigators are asking the driver of the van to come forward.

Baseball-Tigers' closer Valverde getting hammered in playoffs

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers, taking on the San Francisco Giants in pursuit of their first World Series crown since 1984, may have to achieve their mission without help from struggling closer Jose Valverde.

Valverde saved 35 games in the regular season but during the playoffs has imploded, getting hammered in the American League Division Series against Oakland, the league championship series against New York and in Wednesday's opener of the World Series.

"It happens for a lot of players," Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta said before Thursday's night's Game Two of the Fall Classic at AT&T Park. "Right now, it's not a good moment for him.

"But we try to support him, we try to talk to him and let him know to forget about what happened yesterday or the day before and try to go for the next game."

In the Giants' 8-3 triumph in Wednesday's World Series opener, Valverde surrendered two runs on four straight hits before getting yanked by manager Jim Leyland, who called on him in the seventh inning.

The lone out Valverde managed was against the opposing pitcher, striking out Tim Lincecum on a 3-2 pitch.

"I certainly don't think he was bad last night," Leyland said. "He wasn't real good. The biggest thing with Valverde is the same thing that's bitten him all year where he's been too much in the middle of the plate."

Leyland said Valverde has the heat on his fastball, it's just that the location is off.

"People have all kind of answers as to what's been wrong," he said. "But from what I see, he was 92, 93 (mph) last night with a couple 94s, so I think it's just a matter of locating his fastball and keeping it out of the middle of the plate."

Prior to Wednesday's game, the 34-year-old Dominican had not pitched since the opening game of the ALCS when the Yankees tagged him for a pair of two-run homers in the ninth inning of a game they led 4-0.

Detroit survived Valverde's ninth-inning disaster with two runs in the 12th in a 6-4 triumph.

In his previous playoff appearance, Valverde came on in the ninth-inning of an AL Division Series-clinching situation with a two-run lead and six batters later Oakland claimed a 4-3 win.

Left-handed reliever Phil Coke closed the most recent Detroit wins, but Leyland may be forced to use a closer by committee approach.

Ten-year veteran Valverde has 277 career saves but during the 2012 playoffs is 0-1 with a 30.38 earned run average.

Leyland had wanted Valverde to get his confidence back in Wednesday's game even though it was not a save opportunity. The Tigers were already down 6-1 when Valverde took the hill.

"I thought it was a good opportunity to get him back out there, get him back on the mound, get a little bit of a feel for it," he said. (Editing by Larry Fine)
