No Google Glasses allowed, declares dive bar

Google?s high-tech augmented reality ?Project Glass? spectacles are still in development, and not available for purchase. But Seattle?s 5 Point Cafe is getting ahead of the game ? and fueling a debate over privacy ? by banning the devices from the bar in advance.

The 5 Point posted this message on its Facebook page this week: ?For the record, The 5 Point is the first Seattle business to ban in advance Google Glasses. And a** kickings will be encouraged for violators.?

Why is the 5 Point doing this?

?I?m a thought leader,? jokes Dave Meinert, owner of the 5 Point, speaking on the Luke Burbank Show at GeekWire news partner KIRO-FM Friday morning. ?First you have to understand the culture of the 5 Point, which is a sometimes seedy, maybe notorious place. People want to go there and be not known ... and definitely don?t want to be secretly filmed or videotaped and immediately put on the Internet.?

He admits, ?Part of this is a joke, to be funny on Facebook, and get reaction. But part of it?s serious, because we don?t let people film other people or take photos unwanted of people in the bar, because it is kind of a private place that people go.?

Meinert notes that the 5 Point is near Amazon, and acknowledges that ?tech geeks? have been known to patronize the bar. ?It?s OK if you wear them,? he says. ?I just don?t want them worn inside.?

Presumably this rule would apply to Seattle?s notorious Creepy Cameraman, too.

Check out the original post on GeekWire for Luke Burbank?s full interview with Meinert. See KIRO Radio for more.

We?re on Fire?and Not in a Good Way

If you?ve ever tried to defend the validity of global warming to someone who doesn?t believe in it, you?ve probably heard them say, ?The Earth thawed itself out of an Ice Age before and no one called that global warming!?

But science is proving that our current warming trends aren?t on par with our previous ones at all; new research evidences that what we?re facing now may truly be unprecedented. ?

According to a new study conducted by researchers from Oregon State University and Harvard, between 2000 and 2009, the planet was hotter than 75 percent of the last 11,300 years. Most alarming, our current global temperature increases are happening faster than ever.

This is how it started: Scientists found that at the turn of the 20th century, the planet was still in a cooling phase; for the previous 5,000 years, temperatures had slowly dropped by about 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit. However, just a century later, the opposite happened; temperatures shot up by 1.3 degrees.

That means that a temperature shift that should have taken 5,000 years to manifest, suddenly took just 100 years.

?

But we're not supposed to be warming up at all. Were it not for man-made industry, the planet would still be in a cooling phase and getting colder.

Instead, our greenhouse gas emissions are ensuring the opposite. Scientists say that our impending temperature shifts could see further increases ranging from two to 11.5 degrees, and by 2100, they expect our planet will be the hottest it's ever been.

NPR reports that Gavin Schmidt, a climate researcher at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies confirmed, "The climate changes to come are going to be larger than anything that human civilization and agriculture has seen in its entire existence.?

As the mercury continues to rise and freakish weather patterns continue to emerge, those who had previously balked at the idea of global warming are coming around to accepting it as a fact, which isn't as positive a development as you might expect.

While a majority of Americans, even Republicans, now believe that we have a global warming problem, so does Wall Street, which is hoping to capitalize on our environmental downfall in no small measure.

SFGate reports that financial firms aren?t dumping money into ventures like clean energy that will prevent climate change, but are instead shifting funds into those meant to profit from environmental disaster.

Some, like the hedge fund Water Asset Management, are putting money into water rights and treatment plants, which they predict will skyrocket in value as our fresh water supplies become poisoned. Others, like NunaMinerals are ramping up coal mining in parts of Greenland that were previously covered by glacial ice.

True, Wall Street has never been a bastion of morality, and mercifully, there are still a myriad of eco-entrepreneurs and even a few bigger businesses, dedicated to operating with more sustainable business practices. Surprisingly, Dunkin? Donuts Brands is among them, leading the charge.

According to The New York Times, the donut retailer recently pledged to set a timetable to obtain 100 percent of its palm oil from sustainable sources. A mainstay in industrial production, palm oil is an often-used substance in a range of products that span from sweets to cosmetics. But it's also a major environmental scourge; palm oil production releases massive quantities of greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously destroying the rain forests meant to absorb them. The oil can be ethically sourced, but often is not.

Are sustainably-sourced donuts really going to help global warming? Yes. They may not be the only answer, but that?s because there is no one answer. With human industry pushing temperatures to all-time highs within the next 100 years, our salvation may just lie in finding the millions of small ways we can alter our lives and businesses to lessen their environmental impact, not because it feels good?we're beyond that?but because the life of our planet clearly depends upon it.

Does this latest study spur you to do more to lessen your own impact? Tell us about it in the Comments.

Budget cuts end White House tours, but not finger-pointing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The sixth-grade class at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Waverly, Iowa, sent a message this week that was heard in the White House briefing room.

"The White House is our house," the class said in a video posted on Facebook. "Please let us visit."

But their trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, which had been set for March 16, is off. White House tours will be suspended starting on Saturday due to mandated across-the-board spending cuts known as "sequestration." The move will save the federal government an estimated $74,000 a week.

Many were left holding worthless tour tickets, secured months in advance through members of Congress. There is no rain check for a White House tour.

The children's video caught the attention of White House reporters, and of the top Republican in Congress.

"What is your answer, or the president's answer, to the sixth-graders at St. Paul's Lutheran School?" one reporter asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

"It is extremely unfortunate that we have a situation like the sequester that compels the kinds of tradeoffs and decisions that this represents," said Carney.

He said the Secret Service, which is involved in the tours, offered various options to deal with sequester-related cuts ranging from canceling tours to furloughs and cuts in overtime.

"And in order to allow the Secret Service to best fulfill its core missions, the White House made the decision that we would, unfortunately, have to temporarily suspend these tours," Carney said.

When another White House spokesman was asked whether private donations might put the tours back on track, he said that step might be unfeasible given the technical requirements of the sequester.

The last time the White House closed its doors to school groups was after the September 11, 2001, attacks. The tours resumed the following February, with a suspension in the spring of 2003 during the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

The general public was not allowed back into the White House until September 2003.

'A LITTLE BIT HEARTBREAKING'

The decision found little favor with supporters of St. Paul's sixth-graders, who asked Facebook viewers to "like" their video to agitate for putting the tour back on their Washington itinerary.

By late Friday, nearly 1,000 had "liked" the post, nearly 500 had shared it and more than 100 had commented.

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner boasted that tours of the Capitol would continue.

"Even though our budget's been cut like everyone else's, thanks to proper planning, we're able to avoid furloughs amongst Capitol workers, and tours are going to remain available for all Americans," Boehner told reporters on Thursday.

He called the White House decision "disappointing" and "silly," the result of a failure to find savings in other parts of the budget.

Benno Nelson, a Los Angeles-based film director and self-described "civic nerd" who is planning a family trip to Washington in May, had a one-word response when told of the tour cancellations: "Nooooo!"

"Definitely to get a tour of the White House is something I was really looking forward to, and I planned it in advance and called my congressman. ... To hear that they're not doing that is a little bit heartbreaking," he said.

The recorded White House message for those looking for tour information is as contrite as a recorded message can get:

"Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that White House tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013, until further notice. Unfortunately we will not be able to reschedule affected tours. We very much regret having to take this action, particularly during the popular spring touring season."

Study: Facebook users sharing more personal info despite increased privacy concerns

Study Facebook users sharing more personal info despite increased privacy concerns

Carnegie Mellon University conducted a study following more than 5,000 Facebook users over six years, from 2005 and 2011, and found that changes in the social network's privacy policies caused users to share more -- not less -- personal data. Lest you think this means that users suddenly trusted the site more, Carnegie Mellon says that Facebookers became more and more protective of their personal details as the social network grew in membership -- and that the uptick in shared information is a result of increasingly granular privacy settings. If you recall, Facebook introduced new in-depth privacy controls in 2010, and the study found that the release of these new settings corresponded to users sharing more personal data, both within their network of friends and with strangers and third-party applications.

It's been quite some time since the new privacy policy was introduced, but the university says the sample group didn't reduce the amount of info shared with non-friends on the network, even as of 2011. The takeaway? Well, it's safe to say that more privacy controls doesn't equal more vigilance in protecting personal data, and it's certainly not a stretch to call Facebook's settings confusing. The researchers' comparison of the struggle for privacy to the eternal plight of Sisyphus? That might be a touch more dramatic.

Senator Backs Cell Phone Unlocking; iPhone 5S Rumors; iBooks Launches in Japan

The Best Upcoming Cell Phones (Update)

Topping tech headlines on Tuesday, a Minnesota senator pledged to unveil a bill this week that would make cell phone unlocking legal.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat, announced plans for the bill a day after the White House unveiled its support for cell phone unlocking. Klobuchar's bill would reverse an October decision from the Library of Congress's Copyright Office, which gave consumers a 90-day window to unlock their phones without carrier permission before it became illegal in January.

Meanwhile, the new tentatively named iPhone 5S will likely arrive in August, according to Apple-focused site iMore, which cited "sources familiar with the plans." The updated smartphone will keep the same overall form factor and size of the current iPhone 5, but will boast an improved camera and an advanced processor. The same in-the-know people claim Cupertino may release an updated line of iPads, including the iPad 5 and second-gen iPad mini, sometime in April.

In other Apple news, the company launched an updated version of iBooks, adding hundreds of thousands of Japanese titles. Version 3.1 includes support for local content and "a number of improvements for reading Asian language books," the company said. Publishers Kodansha, Kadokawa, Bungeishunju, Gakken, and Gentosha joined the application, bringing digitally exclusive titles and best-selling stories to the tablet.

Hon Hai chief in Tokyo for talks on Sharp deal: media

In response to the increased attention and concern for America's rising rates of obesity and diabetes, the food industry has responded by creating what they often refer to as "better-for-you" foods. These include, among other things: bags of dried fruit slices, organic bars and cookies, yogurts, smoothies, vegetable crisps, and, of course, baked, not fried, potato chips. In turn, these items have begun to replace the more traditional junk food found in our children's school vending machines.

Incredimail?s New iPad Version Turns Email Into A Flipboard-Style Interface, Easy For The Average Person

peek_ftueWho'd have thought email would suddenly be the hot app startups were going after, but that appears to be what's happening. And it's being driven both by a desire to make email 'work' better and by the rise of the touch interface. Consider, if you will, the hype around the new "Mailbox" app from developer Orchestra which is aiming to turn a streamlined Gmail client into an uber to-do list. It's winning some plaudits from some quarters, though not so much from others. But the other angle which is being explored is the rich new area of the touch interface. Thus it is that there's a new kid on the block in the shape of Incredimail for the iPad, which has been been out before but today is released in a new version.

New Mexico Lobos Control Their Own Destiny

Christopher Hanewinckel ? USA TODAY SPORTS

The 2012-2013?New Mexico Lobos?basketball team is one of the country?s most underrated, in spite of their?scorching 25-4 start?which includes a stellar 12-2 record in Mountain West Conference play.

Owners of the No. 2 slot in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) which measures schedule strength, the Lobos have dispatched conference and non-conference opponents alike, with only conference games against the Nevada Wolfpack and Air Force Falcons prior to the conference tournament.

Given that RPI is nominally the most important factor which determines not only whether a team makes the 68-team NCAA Tournament field, but where those teams are seeded that do make the tournament, the Lobos hold their destiny in their hands. With a strong finish against Nevada and Air Force ? and a strong showing in the conference tourney which at this point is non-essential ? there?s an argument to be made that the Lobos deserve one of the No. 1 seeds in March Madness.

Of course, on the surface, the Lobos aren?t one of the top four teams in the country but their RPI and the elements included within it suggest they are being overlooked. ?The Lobos have beaten more top 100 teams than any other team in the country, they have as many top 25 and top 50 wins as several of the teams highly ranked and their success against teams on the road is better than teams like the Duke Blue Devils, Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines.

In other words, the Lobos are not to be taken lightly.

Steve Alford made a calculated risk when arriving in Albuquerque in 2007 after an eight-year stint with the Iowa Hawkeyes and it appears that risk was well thought out. Not only has Alford further solidified an impressive pipeline of talent from the fabled Australian Institute of Sport, his ability to recruit California and the Southwest has been impressive.

The result is a program that?s defense-focused ? the Lobos are only scoring 67.2 points per game but?only giving up 60.4? and play with composure and strong fundamentals night-in and night-out.

In that respect, they are a true reflection of their coach ? a player who did things the right way all of the time, in spite of being under the constant scrutiny of legendary coach Bobby Knight while with the Indiana Hoosiers.

If you?re looking for a Cinderella to follow during March Madness, keep your eyes on the Lobos.

You?ll be glad you did.

MSR Online ? Doctor's Advice for Your Good Health

?

By Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D.

?

Dr. Crutchfield, what can I do improve the quality of my skin, especially in these dry winter months?

?

www.dandavisstudios.comGreat question.?Walk into the skin care/cosmetic area of any major department store, and it is dizzying to see the hundreds, if not thousands, of choices for skin care.?To complicate matters, there are sales people wearing white coats, looking like either mad scientists or doctors, who are all too eager to recommend their company?s multi-step skin care program.

Even in our homes, we are flooded with late-night infomercials touting the latest products that promise to solve your skin-care woes.?The good news is, smart skin care can be a simple four-step process: cleansing, hydration, protection and correction.

?

1.? Cleansing

Cleansers with either no detergent or a very low detergent value help preserve the natural oils in your skin.?You don?t need harsh cleansers or exfoliants; just use a cotton washcloth.?Your skin will naturally exfoliate itself.

Several good over-the-counter cleansers include Vanicream Cleansing Bar, Cetaphil, and Dove Unscented Cleansing Bar.?Everyone?s skin chemistry is different, so experiment until you find a product that works best for your skin type.

?

2.? Hydration

Dry skin causes more skin problems that just about any other single issue.?The skin itself contains natural humectants (moisturizers) such as hyaluronic acid and other moisture-attracting molecules.

The key to keeping your skin moist is to apply an emollient moisturizing lotion after bathing.?Gently pat your skin dry with a cotton towel and immediately apply a lotion.?This does two things: It creates a protective barrier and seals in moisture.?It also adds additional moisturizer lotions to generate an increased production of the body?s natural hyaluronic acid.

Moisturizers should be applied over the entire body twice daily ? at least once after bathing.?This contributes more to overall skin care and skin fitness than just about anything else, if done on a regular basis.

One of the newest lotions on the market is CeraVe.?It is a microlaminated, multivesicular emulsion containing small droplets that break down for several hours after you apply it, providing continued moisture.?Other good moisturizing products include Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion with Colloidal Oatmeal and Amlactin XL Moisturizing Lotion.

?

3.?Protection

Sun protection is a major concern for the prevention of skin cancer, as well as lines and wrinkles.?One of life?s cruel ironies is that most people will receive 75 percent of their total lifetime sun exposure by age 21.?In other words, by the time most of us are wise enough to protect ourselves from the sun, it?s too late.

The most effective sunscreens contain both an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher and UVA (ultraviolet A) protection.?The SPF protects against burn, which is caused by UVB (ultraviolet B) rays.

UVA rays actually penetrate much deeper and cause more long-term damage, such as skin cancer.?To properly protect your skin, apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure (it takes 20 minutes for the lotion to set in the skin) and reapply every hour.

Of course, it should be applied even more frequently if you are perspiring or swimming.?Melashade is a great new sunscreen that is designed specifically for the face.

The second component is sun-protective clothing.?The key here is to make sure that the fabric has an extremely tight weave that blocks out the sun?s harmful rays, yet is lightweight and vented for comfort.?Coolibar produces an extensive line of sun-protective clothing and accessories for adults and children.

The third protective measure is to use topical creams containing antioxidants.?The skin undergoes many biochemical processes, and some of the byproducts ? called free radicals ? can be very damaging to the skin.?Also, we are assaulted with other damaging pollutants from the environment, such as cigarette smoke and other environmental pollutants.

Creams containing antioxidants essentially ?mop up? these free radicals, preventing additional skin damage.?I suggest using an antioxidant-rich cream as part of your daily skin protection regimen.?Don?t forget to wear UVB-protective eyewear; it is as important to good eye health as sunscreens are to the skin.

The last/fourth step is ?correction,? and we will cover that in a future column.

?

Action Steps for better skin now

1)?Gently cleanse your skin daily with a non-drying cleanser.

2) Bathe/shower daily, but immediately gently pat dry with a cotton towel and liberally apply a moisturizer all over. Apply the moisturizer all over twice daily.

3) Protect from the sun using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and stated ?UVB protection.?

If you follow these simple steps, you will notice better skin in one week.

?

Charles E. Crutchfield III, MD is a board certified dermatologist and Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School.?He also has a private practice in Eagan, MN. He has been selected as one of the top 10 dermatologists in the United States by Black Enterprise magazine and one of the top 21 African-American physicians in the U.S. by the Atlanta Post. Dr. Crutchfield is an active member of the Minnesota Association of Black Physicians, MABP.org.

Mitch McConnell Joins Rand Paul Filibuster Of John Brennan Nomination

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell joined fellow Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul's filibuster of John Brennan's nomination for CIA director, praising Paul for his "tenacity" and "conviction."

As Paul's filibuster, which began on Wednesday morning, neared the 12 hour mark, McConnell made an appearance on the Senate floor to voice his support for his colleague's efforts.

"I think it's entirely appropriate that the senator from Kentucky engage in an extended debate with the support of his colleagues," McConnell said.

McConnell added that he would oppose Brennan's nomination if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) invoked cloture to end the filibuster.

McConnell recently hired a close aide to Ron Paul and Rand Paul, Jesse Benton, to help run his reelection campaign, strengthening a relationship that began frayed, when Paul knocked off an establishment, McConnell backed candidate in a 2010 primary.

Human Y chromosome much older than previously thought

Mar. 4, 2013 ? The discovery and analysis of an extremely rare African American Y chromosome pushes back the time of the most recent common ancestor for the Y chromosome lineage tree to 338,000 years ago. This time predates the age of the oldest known anatomically modern human fossils.

University of Arizona geneticists have discovered the oldest known genetic branch of the human Y chromosome -- the hereditary factor determining male sex.

The new divergent lineage, which was found in an individual who submitted his DNA to Family Tree DNA, a company specializing in DNA analysis to trace family roots, branched from the Y chromosome tree before the first appearance of anatomically modern humans in the fossil record.

The results are published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

"Our analysis indicates this lineage diverged from previously known Y chromosomes about 338,000 ago, a time when anatomically modern humans had not yet evolved," said Michael Hammer, an associate professor in the University of Arizona's department of ecology and evolutionary biology and a research scientist at the UA's Arizona Research Labs. "This pushes back the time the last common Y chromosome ancestor lived by almost 70 percent."

Unlike the other human chromosomes, the majority of the Y chromosome does not exchange genetic material with other chromosomes, which makes it simpler to trace ancestral relationships among contemporary lineages. If two Y chromosomes carry the same mutation, it is because they share a common paternal ancestor at some point in the past. The more mutations that differ between two Y chromosomes the farther back in time the common ancestor lived.

Originally, a DNA sample obtained from an African American living in South Carolina was submitted to the National Geographic Genographic Project. When none of the genetic markers used to assign lineages to known Y chromosome groupings were found, the DNA sample was sent to Family Tree DNA for sequencing. Fernando Mendez, a postdoctoral researcher in Hammer's lab, led the effort to analyze the DNA sequence, which included more than 240,000 base pairs of the Y chromosome.

Hammer said "the most striking feature of this research is that a consumer genetic testing company identified a lineage that didn't fit anywhere on the existing Y chromosome tree, even though the tree had been constructed based on perhaps a half-million individuals or more. Nobody expected to find anything like this."

About 300,000 years ago, the time the Neanderthals are believed to have split from the ancestral human lineage. It was not until more than 100,000 years later that anatomically modern humans appear in the fossil record. They differ from the more archaic forms by a more lightly built skeleton, a smaller face tucked under a high forehead, the absence of a cranial ridge and smaller chins.

Hammer said the newly discovered Y chromosome variation is extremely rare. Through large database searches, his team eventually was able to find a similar chromosome in the Mbo, a population living in a tiny area of western Cameroon in sub-Saharan Africa.

"This was surprising because previously the most diverged branches of the Y chromosome were found in traditional hunter-gatherer populations such as Pygmies and the click-speaking KhoeSan, who are considered to be the most diverged human populations living today."

"Instead, the sample matched the Y chromosome DNA of 11 men, who all came from a very small region of western Cameroon," Hammer said. "And the sequences of those individuals are variable, so it's not like they all descended from the same grandfather."

Hammer cautions against popular concepts of "mitochondrial Eve" or "Y chromosome Adam" that suggest all of humankind descended from exactly one pair of humans that lived at a certain point in human evolution.

"There has been too much emphasis on this in the past," he said. "It is a misconception that the genealogy of a single genetic region reflects population divergence. Instead, our results suggest that there are pockets of genetically isolated communities that together preserve a great deal of human diversity."

Still, Hammer said, "It is likely that other divergent lineages will be found, whether in Africa or among African-Americans in the U.S. and that some of these may further increase the age of the Y chromosome tree."

He added: "There has been a lot of hype with people trying to trace their Y chromosome to different tribes, but this individual from South Carolina can say he did it."

The study came about by combined efforts of a private business, Family Tree DNA, the efforts of a citizen scientist, Bonnie Schrack, and the research capabilities at the UA.

(AP) ? Panda habitats, tea gardens and red pagodas have never been part of the visual vocabulary of the Las Vegas Strip. But Sin City is about to get all three and much more as a Malaysian conglomerate prepares to build the first new mega-casino to come to town since the recession wiped out a slew of projects in 2008.

The Genting Group announced Monday that it will break ground in 2014 on the 87-acre site where the partially built Echelon project has sat for nearly five years, put on indefinite hold by Boyd Gaming Corp.

Executives said they are launching the new project despite continued softness in Las Vegas gambling revenue because they are ideally positioned to capitalize on the flood of Asian tourists flocking to the Strip.

Government officials, including Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, applauded the news, saying the project could breathe new life into a tired stretch of the tourist corridor where several projects stalled during the recession.

"I think we've turned conventional wisdom on its head today," Sandoval said, adding that he hopes the Genting project will encourage more foreign investment in the Strip.

Genting, Southeast Asia's largest casino operator, will rebrand the languishing structure Resorts World Las Vegas.

Executives say the project is designed to make tourists accustomed to the casinos of Singapore and Malaysia feel at home, and to give American tourists a taste of another culture.

It will feature pagoda-style roofs on soaring glass towers, martial arts performances, regional Chinese cuisine and what officials describe as a more family-friendly atmosphere.

The complex will include at least 3,500 hotel rooms, a convention center and a 4,000-seat theater.

Genting paid $350 million for the property and will spend as much as $7 billion building on it, according to Senior Vice President of Development Christian Goode.

The conglomerate plans to start construction in 2014 and open in 2016, creating tens of thousands of jobs while revamping a project many thought would remain undeveloped for years.

The steel-and-concrete skeleton of the Echelon project has stood on the north Strip since 2008, a symbol of the initial promise and disastrous end of the Las Vegas construction boom.

The area once boasted casinos considered the cutting edge of luxury and style. But in recent years it has become the home of huge empty lots and darkened projects, including Las Vegas Plaza and Fontainebleau Las Vegas, a hulking bluish-green tower that was 70 percent finished when construction ended.

The Genting announcement is the latest sign that the stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard home to Circus Circus and the Stratosphere might be turning around. Developers also broke ground last month on renovations to the Sahara hotel-casino that closed in 2011. It is expected to reopen next year as SLS Las Vegas.

Genting said it will build on the skeleton of the Echelon to create one of the largest complexes on the Las Vegas Strip. By comparison, the CityCenter complex, which features the upscale Aria casino, spreads across 67 acres. Caesars Palace sits on 85 acres.

Las Vegas-based casino companies have been scrambling for years to cash in on the influx of Asian tourists into the Chinese gambling enclave of Macau. But Genting believes it can turn that same stream of tourists into big moneymaker back in Las Vegas.

"As China develops and grows their economy, there's a burgeoning middle class and they want to travel," Goode said. "We think Las Vegas is a natural destination."

Goode said he was not swayed by the conventional wisdom that the Strip had been overbuilt. Gambling revenue in Nevada has not yet exceeded the high it reached in 2007, but the state is attracting more visitors than ever, with the number of tourists scraping 40 million a year.

"Analysts, they have their one opinion and we have another," he said.

The Echelon was intended to be a mixed-use development complete with 5,000 rooms in six hotels, lush landscaping and luxury amenities. The 48-year-old Stardust resort was demolished in 2007 to make way for the $4.8 billion project that had been slated to open by 2010 next to Circus Circus.

Construction workers toiled for a year and built 12 stories on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Desert Inn Road before the credit markets choked.

Reid called the abandoned property "really ugly," and said the Resorts World project would be a tremendous, "stupendous," boon for the region.

"International tourists, they spend more, they stay longer in our state," he said.

Genting opened its first casino in 1971 in Malaysia and now operates sites in the Philippines, United Kingdom, Singapore and the Bahamas.

It has also been expanding into the United States. The conglomerate opened a New York casino in 2011 and is pursuing a project in Miami. CEO KT Lim said the Las Vegas project would establish the company as a bicoastal player in the U.S. gambling industry.

7 Basic Principles of Content Marketing and SEO that Actually Work

content marketing seoThe basic principles of content marketing and SEO are almost too obvious.

  1. Use keywords literally and deliberately
  2. Deliver more value than your audience expects
  3. Do it often and consistently

Yes, this is an incredibly watered down version of content marketing and SEO but if you had no other information on which to build your inbound marketing strategy these principles, in time, would take you to the promise land.

Deliver value with prejudice.

?for human SEO trumps every tactic you can learn from Rand Fishkin and the SEOMoz community. That?s in no way a knock on Rand or SEOMoz for I hold that organization and everyone that contributes to it in the highest regard.

That being said here?s a few basic principles of technical SEO that will have an immediate impact on your ability to get found in Google Search.

1) Target mid-tail and long-tail keywords first.

Targeting mid-tail and long-tail keywords will not yield the highest traffic volumes to begin with, but will instead return the most qualified traffic. ?It may seem counterintuitive but this strategy is designed for ?Early wins.? ?If you are just testing content marketing and SEO as an online strategy for your business and you have to report results to a boss targeting, mid-tail and long-tail keywords would be a strong recommendation.

Your boss doesn?t have to know you only got 50 hits on your blog if five of them turned into sales?

2) Use keyword synonyms throughout your articles and website.

Try to stay away from repeating the same keyword phrase over and over again. ?The Penguin and Panda updates to Google removed the necessity to keyword stuff. ?Google is looking for natural keyword density, written with the purpose of delivering value. ?No one in the natural course of writing or speaking would use the phrase ?New York Workers Compensation Insurance??15 times in a 450 word article.

Use variations like, ?NY Workers Comp,? ?Workers Compensation in New York,? ?Workers Comp Insurance,? where those variations make sense.

3) Build upon your successful articles and pages.

If you find that a certain blog post or page on your website is performing extremely well, consider going back and adding onto the article. Take the subject deeper, make the article even more value than it already is?

This does two things: First is freshens up the post letting Google know you keep the information up-to-day adding to it?s importance, Second it creates an even deeper more in-depth article adding weight to the quality of the content from the viewpoint of Google.

This strengthens the specific keywords that post is ranked for.

4) Do not focus solely on one keyword or keyword phrase throughout your entire site.

Even if you are writing about a very focused niche, say taxidermy with a specialty in owls, there are a variety of phrases that rotate around that topic which are important to address in addition to your primary keyword or keyword phrase.

When I am creating content I put keywords into three categories:

  • Primary Keywords ? These are core keywords of your site. ?These are the trigger words for consumers looking to buy your product. ?Set up pages and/or landing pages dedicated to each keyword or keyword phrase specifically.
  • Supporting Keywords ? These are often long-tail keyword phrases that add onto your core primary keywords. ?Most of these keywords will be addressed through blog posts.
  • Orbiting Keywords ? These are keywords that aren?t directly related to your core business and aren?t associated directly with your primary keywords as to be supporting. ?Often these are keywords outside your specific industry that attract the same kind of consumer. ?An example would be an insurance agency writing articles about mortgages. ?An insurance agency doesn?t sell mortgages but consumers interested in mortgages also need insurance??

target keywords

5) Internal linking does tells Google that your old content is still important.

Internal linking may not deliver the same ?Google Juice? as external linking, however, using a consistent internal link strategy is important for sending Google bots deep into your website to older posts which still contain value, as well as describing those internal pages and the keywords that should be associated with them.

This can be incredibly valuable if you have a page specifically dedicated to one keyword phrase that converts web traffic into new leads well. ?Use internal linking to reinforce both the technical and human SEO of that page by sending more and more traffic there.

6) Build a natural mixture of external links into your highest converting content.

There are many different types of external links including strong, relevant keywords from sites ranked well for a similar keyword or keyword phrase all the way down to cheap, shallow link farms with a thousand links on one page. ?Though I would encourage you to stay away from the very bottom of the external link spectrum (as that gets into the fuzzy blackhat SEO region) it is very important to diversify your external links.

I would however, if possible recommend a strong emphasis towards links from targeted sites with a long history and deep content structure. ?These are obviously harder to get as everyone targets websites of high quality, (a good example in the marketing industry would be Copyblogger), but they do hold a lot of weight.

As these websites often take quite a bit of work to get featured on and quantity of links is also important, I recommend targeting sites with a lower barrier of entry as well.

7) Use words for their literal meaning

For as sophisticated a system as Google has created, to the best of my knowledge Google Bots still don?t sarcasm. ?I enjoy an intriguing headline as much as the next guy, but if you?re writing content for the purpose of getting found in search you need to use deliberate, literal language.

That doesn?t mean you can?t use funny headlines meant to entertain your audience. ?By all means? be funny. ?Just understand that those aren?t the headlines that are going to help you get found in search (though legitimately those types of headlines may help you with social sharing?)

The Basic Principles of Content Marketing and SEO

Done right content marketing and SEO allow your business to get found in search at the exact moment consumers need your product.

Remember how this article started.

Deliver value with prejudice. ?Before all other things create content that is valuable to your target audience. ?Master that skill first then focus on best practices for content marketing and SEO

Understanding the basic principles of content marketing and SEO builds a solid foundation to generate more inbound leads but everything always comes back to value.

Below you?ll find the slides for a recent presentation I gave (you hire me as a speaker here).

Enjoy?

If you found value in this presentation and would like to share on your blog use the code below:

The Rub

Here?s the deal? If someone tries to oversell you on content marketing and SEO tactics? run. ?If you haven?t mastered delivering value yet anything beyond the basic principles outlined in this article is a waste of time and money.

So??focus you mental effort on telling your unique story of value in exceptional ways.

Good things will happen.

Thank you and Good luck,
