Larry Page: 1.5 million Android devices activated every day

Android

Android device activations set to hit 1 billion soon

For his opening statements in the Google Q2 2013 earnings call, CEO Larry Page took a minute to remind us the number of Android devices that are out there today. Mirroring what we heard back at Google I/O, Page reiterated that over 900 million Android devices have been activated since being introduced in 2008. He also dropped another number, letting us know that at this point 1.5 million Android devices are activated daily.

Those are some huge numbers considering that Google I/O 2012 gave us a milestone of 400 million total activations. At this rate we'll see that magical 1 billion number soon enough.

Read: Google's Q2 2013 earnings are in — revenue up 19 percent

Exclusive - U.S. seeks new tactic in financial crisis prosecutions

By Emily Flitter

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. federal prosecutors are considering a new strategy for criminally charging Wall Street bankers who packaged and sold bad mortgage loans at the height of the housing bubble, according to a federal official familiar with the investigation.

The official said federal authorities are finding new evidence they say indicates intent to commit fraud over the packaging and sale of mortgage bonds backed by subprime home loans in some of the civil lawsuits plaintiffs' lawyers have filed against large banks.

And they are exploring whether they can build criminal cases against bankers by using a 1984 law intended to punish individuals for scamming commercial banks.

The investigators are part of the Justice Department's Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Working Group, a network of law enforcement agents and prosecutors - both state and federal - working together to probe the mortgage market meltdown that helped trigger the financial crisis.

"The RMBS Working Group members are aggressively investigating both civil and criminal matters across the country. RMBS Working Group members expect to announce more law enforcement actions in the future," said Adora Jenkins, a spokeswoman for the Justice Department.

The group keeps a close eye on every civil suit filed and holds regular conference calls to update its members on developments. It held a day-long meeting on Friday to discuss ongoing investigations and potential new targets, as well as legal strategies, according to the Justice Department.

The strategy involves a shift away from the more widely used securities fraud charge to a less common offense: bank fraud. The advantage is that perpetrators of bank fraud can be charged up to 10 years after their crimes, compared with the five-year statute of limitations on securities fraud, which has already run out on most events leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. A bank fraud conviction carries up to $1 million in fines and a maximum prison sentence of 30 years.

Rita Glavin, a partner at Seward & Kissel in New York who specializes in white-collar, criminal defense, said she thought the statute's broad scope gave prosecutors an opportunity to use it, and adding a conspiracy charge could help.

"When you charge conspiracies or schemes to defraud it gives you a lot of leeway in terms of the types of evidence you're allowed to get in, because it speaks to the defendant's state of mind," she said.

Some legal critics express misgivings. They say it has the whiff of a face-saving measure by the U.S. government in light of criticisms about prosecutors' inability to bring criminal cases over the financial crisis.

The bank fraud statute is more often used to pursue people trying to forge checks, falsify loan documents or make other false statements to banks. Applying the charge to behavior in the securities market would be a novel use of the statute.

"You're taking a statute that predates the entire phenomenon of securitization and trying to apply it to the securities market," said V. Gerard Comizio, a Washington-based partner at Paul Hastings, a law firm.

"I don't think any prosecutor wants to start his or her day dealing with a statute that it's not clear they have jurisdiction to apply," added Comizio, who previously served as an attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and deputy general counsel of the Office of Thrift Supervision.

But using the bank fraud statute could inject new life into the U.S. government's effort to hold accountable the people on Wall Street whose overzealous approach to mortgage lending and securitization is what many economists say resulted in the crippling wave of home foreclosures, the financial crisis and the resulting deep recession.

Only one person faces jail time for activities related to mortgage-backed securities: former Credit Suisse Group AG managing director, Kareem Serageldin, who allowed traders working for him to artificially inflate the values of mortgage-backed securities they were holding in 2007. He pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in April and faces up to five years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for August.

His case, however, isn't like the ones the RMBS group is investigating now because he and his subordinates tried to defraud their own institution, not an outside entity.

SECOND WIND

Federal prosecutors had previously ruled out criminal charges in many investigations into the causes of the financial crisis.

As part of the attempt to breathe new life into criminal cases, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are monitoring civil fraud suits against major banks like JPMorgan Chase & Co and Bank of America Corp , which acquired two of the largest players in the mortgage securitization world - Bear Stearns and Countrywide Financial - in 2008, according to two government sources.

FBI spokesman James Margolin said the bureau sometimes has to rely on civil court cases to turn up evidence of criminal behavior. Amy Bonitatibus, a spokeswoman for JPMorgan, and Lawrence Grayson, a spokesman for Bank of America, both declined to comment.

Civil cases can involve detailed document discovery processes and interviews that law enforcement agents may not have the time or the resources to do, Columbia University School of Law Professor Daniel Richman said.

At the greatest risk of being charged, according to legal experts who have been monitoring the fallout from the mortgage crisis, are former mid-level investment bank employees who, during the peak years of mortgage bond issuance in 2005-2007, stitched together hundreds of thousands of doomed home loans into packages and sold them as highly rated securities.

To prove any banker committed bank fraud, the government would have to show that those packaging and selling the securities deliberately lied about their quality, and that they targeted commercial banks in sales pitches.

"Prosecutors would be looking at the offering memos, prospectuses and so on to see if there were any misrepresentations in them to the banks that purchased them," said David Rosenfield, counsel at Herrick Feinstein specializing in white collar criminal defense. He has no specific connection to the MBS lawsuits. (Reporting By Emily Flitter; Editing by Martin Howell and Leslie Gevirtz)

Dropbox used by Chinese hackers to spread malware

hackers

July 15, 2013 at 3:36 PM ET

Dropbox logo

Dropbox

Dropbox is one of the better-known cloud-based services.

Popular cloud-based file-sharing service Dropbox wants to be all things to all people, with big plans to share application metadata ? game saves, settings preferences and so forth ? as well as raw files across devices and platforms.

But when Dropbox CEO Drew Houston announced last week that Dropbox intends to "replace the hard drive," he probably didn't expect Chinese hackers to take him up on it so quickly.

Comment Crew, the same Chinese cyberespionage team thought to be behind the recent attack on The New York Times, has been using publicly shared Dropbox folders to spread malware, reports Arlington, Va., digital-security firm Cyber Squared.

"The attackers have simply registered for a free Dropbox account, uploaded the malicious content and then publicly shared it with their targeted users," a Cyber Squared blog posting explained last week.

For malicious hackers, Dropbox is an attractive malware distribution platform because it's widely used in the corporate environment and is unlikely to be blocked by IT security teams.

In this way, Cyber Squared wrote, "the attackers could mask themselves behind the trusted Dropbox brand, increasing credibility and the likelihood of victim interaction with the malicious file from either personal or corporate Dropbox users."

[8 Simple Tips for Securing Your Computer]

When a Dropbox file is publicly shared, the persons with whom it's shared receive emails from Dropbox informing them of the share, along with a link to the file on the Dropbox website.

In the attack Cyber Squared examined, normal procedure was followed, but the shared file was an infected Word document of interest to China's neighbors, indicating a "spear phishing" attack.

The Word document concerned commercial relations between the United States and the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, nine of which ring the South China Sea.

Embedded in the Word document was what seemed to be a PDF file on the same topic, but which was really malware exploiting a hole in Adobe Flash Player.

The malware copied itself to the targeted user's hard drive, then reached out for instructions to a WordPress blog, which itself appeared to be a boring recitation of Asian trade statistics.

But seemingly decorative strings of text nestled among the postings on the WordPress blog were full of meaning.

For example, the strings "@@@@@@207.86.128.60@@@@@@" or "######443######" may not look like much to the untrained eye.

The first string includes an Internet Protocol address, which computers use to find websites; the second string references port 443, which the Internet Protocol sets aside for encrypted Web connections.

The WordPress blog was thus telling the malware where to go for further instructions and which port to connect on. (The URL in the example above is TechNewsDaily's own.)

Cyber Squared didn't wait to see what would happen after the malware received its instructions. Previous Comment Crew attacks have included mass penetration of organizational network, theft of intellectual property and other data and installation of spyware to keep track of a targeted user's online activities and communications.

GoInstant's Next Chapter Is A Developer Platform For The ?Multiplayer Web?

goinstantGoInstant, the startup that Salesforce.com bought for $70 million, has launched a new developer platform for what it calls the "multiplayer web." The company, which operates as a separate entity within Salesforce,?uses the term to describe the new brand of the web that is more about shared experience. These are apps, such as?Twitter and Facebook, that provide endless rivers of news and the ability to comment on a photo and see other comments as they appear. And Google Docs is an example of a service that has a focus on presence with its co-editing capability.

Sony VAIO Duo 13

With the Sony VAIO Duo 13, Sony improves upon the design of its predecessor, the Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX). This model offers a larger screen and a smaller hinge, and it's outfitted with a fourth-generation Intel Core i5 processor. The biggest improvement has to do with battery life; it managed over eight hours on our battery rundown test. Sony still has a few kinks to works out though; the display loses luminance when viewed from an angle and cannot be adjusted while in laptop mode, which on a hybrid tablet is a significant issue.

Design and Features
As with the Sony Duo 11, the Duo 13 uses Sony's Surf Slider design to make the transition from a tablet to a laptop. It still uses a spring-loaded hinge mechanism to move the tablet into a semi-upright position, but this time around the hinge is much smaller (3.4 inches). As was the case with the Sony Duo 11, you can't adjust the screen angle when in laptop mode. The screen is held in place by two metal studs on the keyboard deck that fit into two notches on the bottom of the tablet.

The 13.3-inch screen has white borders (a black version is also available) and is housed in a silver carbon fiber chassis. It weighs in at 2.9 pounds, and when in tablet mode it measures a relatively thin 0.77 inches thick and is 13 inches wide by 8.3 inches deep. The keyboard matches the carbon fiber case has a clickable touchpad at the bottom. The pad is very small but it's better than no pad at all, as with the Acer Aspire P3-171-6820. The chiclet-style keyboard is a bit cramped and key travel is fairly shallow, but it is full-sized and gets the job done when typing is essential.

The 1,920-by-1,080 screen uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology to deliver excellent color quality but its viewing angle performance was disappointing; when viewed from an angle the image loses luminance and is noticeably dimmer. On the plus side, colors remain intact, but I expected wider angles from an IPS panel. The fact that you can't adjust the screen angle while using the Duo 13 as a laptop looms large in this regard.

The Duo 13's 10-point capacitive touch-screen technology worked perfectly; gesturing, pinching, zooming, and swiping movements were smooth and accurate. It also supports digitizer technology and comes with a two-button stylus and a couple of pen-centric programs including Art Rage Studio Pro and Note Anytime. As with the Duo 11, the digitizer works well and offers pressure sensitive pen-strokes. Sony added a much needed stylus clip to the right side of the tablet as well as a pull out holder that keeps the pen upright and ready to use.

Ports include two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI output, a headphone jack, and a Magic Gate card reader slot. Also included are a 2-mp front-facing camera, a rear-facing 8-mp camera, Wi-Fi N and Bluetooth 4.0 networking, and both NFC (Near Field Communication) and Wi-Di (Wireless Display) capabilities.

The Duo13's 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) is loaded with Windows 8 and boatload of VAIO-branded apps including VAIO Care, ArcSoft Camera for VAIO, VAIO Message Center, VAIO Update, and VAIO Movie Creator. There's also the usual assortment of web apps such as iHeart Radio, Hulu Plus, Skype, and Slacker. Sony covers the Duo 13 with a one year warranty and toll-free telephone support.

Performance
Sony VAIO Duo 13 The Duo 13 is powered by a fourth-generation Intel Core i5-4200u processor running at 1.6GHz, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 GPU. As such, it turned in impressive scores on our productivity and multimedia benchmark tests. Its PCMark 7 score of 4,535 edged out the Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 (4,526) by a few points and was 132 points higher than the Dell XPS 13-MLK (4,403), but it lagged the Microsoft Surface Pro by 233 points.

Sony VAIO Duo 13

On our Photoshop multimedia test the Duo 13's time of 5 minutes and 38 seconds was quicker than the Acer S7-191-6640 (6:32) by almost a full minute but the Dell XPS 13-MLK (5:30) was quicker by a hair. So were the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T (5:31).

The Duo 13 completed our Handbrake encoding test in 1 minute and 23 seconds, just ahead of the the Acer S7-191-6640 (1:29) and Dell XPS 13-MLK (1:27). In fact, it had the fastest time of the pack, beating the Sony Duo 11 (1:25) by two seconds.

It's Cinebench score of 2.50 was among the highest for Core-i5 powered ultrabooks, second only to the HP Elitebook Folio 9470m (2.62). The Dell XPS 13-MLK scored 2.45, and the Surface Pro scored 2.39.

Graphics performance was predictably sluggish. The Duo 13 managed just 17 fps on our medium quality Aliens vs. Predators test and only 5 fps on the high quality test. Results were similar on the Heaven benchmark. Despite being a tad quicker than the competition the Duo 13 is not well suited to gaming.

Battery life, on the other hand, was outstanding. The Duo 13 lasted just shy of 9 hours (8 hours 55 minutes) on our battery rundown test, blowing the doors off the Dell XPS 13-MLK (4:56), the UX31A-BHI5T (6:38), and Microsoft Surface Pro (4:58). This represents the biggest improvement over the Duo 11, which lasted 3:09.

The Sony VAIO Duo 13 is a compelling choice for anyone looking to join the hybrid ultrabook movement. It's improved slider design and terrific battery life make this 13 inch hybrid a much better choice than it s predecessor, the Duo 11, and you get a larger screen without added weight. That said, an adjustable screen would be a welcome improvement, as would an IPS panel that doesn't dim when viewed from an angle. If you want a bit more productivity horsepower and can live with a smaller screen, the Microsoft Surface Pro remains your best bet, and it'll save you a nice chunk of change.

(AP) ? Cory Monteith, the handsome young actor who shot to fame in the hit TV series "Glee" but was beset by addiction struggles so fierce that he once said he was lucky to be alive, was found dead in a hotel room, police said. He was 31.

Monteith, who played the character Finn Hudson on the Fox TV series about a high school glee club, was found dead in his room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel on Vancouver's waterfront at about noon Saturday, according to police.

Deputy Police Chief Doug Lepard said there was no indication of foul play. Monteith's body was found by hotel staff after he missed his check-out time, Lepard said.

"We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death," Coroner Lisa Lapointe said.

Lepard said Monteith had been out with people earlier and that those people are being interviewed.

"I have no words! My heart is broken," Dot-Marie Jones, who plays football coach Shannon Beiste on "Glee," said in a post on her Twitter account Saturday night. She called Monteith a "hell of a friend" and an "amazing" man.

"What an absolutely tragic loss of a very talented young man," tweeted Zooey Deschanel, star of another Fox show, "New Girl."

Fox and the producers of "Glee," including 20th Century Fox Television, called him an exceptional performer "and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously."

"We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss," his representatives at Viewpoint Public Relations in Los Angeles said in a statement.

In April, Monteith admitted himself to a treatment facility for "substance addiction" and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time.

Lea Michele, his "Glee" co-star and real-life girlfriend, told People magazine that she loved and supported him and was proud he was seeking help.

It was not Monteith's first time in rehab. He received treatment when he was 19 and had previously talked about his addiction struggles, saying he had a serious problem and took just "anything and everything."

He told Parade magazine in 2011 that he was "lucky to be alive."

Monteith, who turned 31 on May 11, starred in "Glee" as a high school football player who puts his status and popularity at risk to join the glee club and its outcast members.

The show, with its pop music-based song-and-dance numbers and high-profile guest stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, became an immediate hit and made stars of its relatively unknown cast.

The series, which debuted in 2009, is in its fourth season.

On his Twitter account, Monteith described himself as "tall, awkward, canadian, actor, drummer, person."

In a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, Monteith was upbeat about life. He said that if "Glee" were to be canceled he would be OK.

"I've never been afraid of working," he said. "I've never been afraid of auditioning for jobs. Obviously, I've never been afraid of anonymity. I was happy (before 'Glee'). I'm happy now. I guess I'm well adjusted."

Monteith was among the "Glee" actors who remained series regulars as their characters graduated high school and moved on to other adventures.

According to his biography on Fox's website, Monteith was born in Calgary, Alberta, and moved to Vancouver Island as a child. Before turning to acting, he held a variety of jobs including Wal-Mart greeter, school bus driver, roofer and cab driver.

Monteith's TV credits included roles on the series "Kaya" and "Kyle XY" and guest appearances on "Smallville," ''Supernatural," ''Stargate," ''Flash Gordon" and "Interns." His film credits included "Final Destination 3," ''The Invisible," ''Deck the Halls" and "Whisper."

Huge post-Sandy tax increases fail to materialize

MANTOLOKING, N.J. (AP) ? With all the fears that Superstorm Sandy created, here's one that never materialized: huge tax increases to make up for property destroyed along the coastlines of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

Waves of federal aid, some strategic borrowing, lowered property values and surplus accounts helped many shore communities avoid having to raise taxes drastically to compensate for the lost tax revenue.

But the sighs of relief are mixed with early jitters of what could happen next year, when the tide of emergency storm aid will have receded and full rebuilding will still elude some neighborhoods.

The thinking was that because shore towns had lost so much taxable property in the Oct. 29 storm, governments would have no choice but to raise taxes on surviving structures to make up the difference. But that was before Congress approved more than $60 billion in Sandy relief, most of it for New Jersey and New York.

"We were all concerned there would be a big tax increase," said Ray Ryan, a resident of Mantoloking, a Jersey shore town where virtually every one of its 521 homes was destroyed or damaged. "But we are delighted it didn't. It makes absolutely wonderful sense when you consider the storm aid that was available."

The affluent borough adopted a 14.6 percent increase in the municipal tax rate. But because the storm lowered property values and because of an influx of storm recovery aid and borrowing, most municipal tax bills will actually be lower this year.

"That's the good news: Taxes in 2013 will be lower," said Councilman Steve Gillingham. "But because these are nonrecurring revenues, it may be hard in subsequent years to provide the same level of services."

The budget calls for $5.6 million in spending, up from just over $4 million last year. But the average tax bill will actually be 23 percent less than last year because storm damage caused property values to plunge by about a third.

For example, the owner of a house previously assessed at $1 million and now worth $670,000 because of storm damage will pay $1,398 in municipal taxes, down from $1,817 a year ago. The owners of a $3 million home now worth about $2 million would pay $4,186 in municipal taxes, down from $5,450 last year.

Those figures do not include school or county taxes and are the only ones over which municipalities have direct control. Homeowners in many towns may still see an overall increase in taxes because of school spending or other causes, but the doomsday scenario many municipal officials ? and homeowners ? had feared is not happening.

Lance White, a Mantoloking resident who is raising his damaged waterfront house, was relieved to hear taxes would not skyrocket this year.

"It would have been a disaster," he said. "We have a lot of people who still don't know what their future is ? whether they can rebuild, when, whether they might have to leave. There is still a lot of uncertainty. Everything worries you when you don't know what's going to happen. It's been difficult here for several months now."

In community after community, municipal taxes are either staying the same this year or going up only very slightly. Money towns had to front out-of-pocket in the fall and winter for emergency cleanup and reconstruction will eventually be paid back by the federal government by as much as 90 percent.

New York state passed legislation to aid badly affected homeowners, authorizing New York City to reimburse them by up to two-thirds of the total bill paid for the 2013 fiscal year. In May, the city announced a decrease in property taxes due next year through reassessments of damaged properties and across-the-board reductions in valuations for some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods.

On Long Island, Long Beach saw its 2-mile boardwalk destroyed and homes inundated with as much as 4 feet of water. The city cut its 2013-14 budget from $85.1 million to $83.3 million, spokesman Gordon Tepper said. Lost sales tax and other revenues from beach passes and access to other recreational events were lower because of the effects of Sandy, he said.

That will mean a moderate property tax increase of 1.49 percent, or an average of $43 per home. Long Beach has already received $24.3 million in reimbursement for debris removal.

In Connecticut, the $278 million Fairfield budget raised taxes 2.4 percent. Officials say they were able to offset storm costs with increases in revenue from other areas and are counting on federal reimbursement of 75 percent of the estimated $8 million in damage.

Belmar was the first Jersey shore town to rebuild its boardwalk, making an aggressive bid to be ready when summer tourism started. It is not raising its municipal tax rate for the third year in a row.

The town was able to do it, Mayor Matt Doherty said, with the help of a federal Community Disaster loan, a funding mechanism being used by many Sandy-hit towns this year that can be repaid over variable lengths of time and may even be forgiven by the feds.

Brick, N.J., where the storm and resulting fires wiped out 100 homes near the ocean and flooded 8,500 others, lost $420 million in taxable property. Yet it is keeping its municipal tax rate the same this year, largely by using nearly $8 million of its $13 million in surplus and counting on millions in storm aid.

Similar stories of averted fiscal crises include Seaside Park, Toms River, Bradley Beach and Middletown. Towns including Manasquan, Spring Lake and Sea Bright and Stafford Township raised taxes, but only slightly.

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) - A Florida jury on Saturday resumed deliberating the fate of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, a case that has attracted wide attention and triggered debate in the U.S. public for more than a year.

The six-woman jury began deliberations inside the Seminole County courthouse in this town in central Florida on Friday but adjourned late in the day after about 3-1/2 hours. They resumed work at about 9 a.m. EDT.

They are to decide whether Zimmerman, who claims he shot Martin in self-defense in February last year, is guilty of second-degree murder or the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Michael McCarron picks London Knights over Michigan Broncos

Michael McCarron has made it official.

    ?

He will play with the defending Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights.

Mark Hunter, Knights' general manager, has also made it official. He?s like the relentless cat stalking his prey. He may not always get what he?s hunting but it won?t be for lack of preparation or trying.

McCarron, a big, strapping winger became a late first-round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in last month?s National Hockey League draft.

His OHL rights are owned by the Knights. McCarron was debating whether he would play in London or for Andy Murray at Western Michigan University.

In the end, the Knights managed to land yet another top prospect headed to an NCAA school.

In this case, Hunter had good luck on his side.

McCarron was ranked 35th among North American skaters by Central Scouting, a second-round rating in the draft. If he had been drafted in the second round, he might not have been offered an immediate contract with the Canadiens. That would have left McCarron?s options open. Once he signed with Montreal, he became ineligible to play NCAA hockey.

McCarron told a Montreal newspaper that getting a contract with Montreal was the deciding factor in whether he played junior hockey or played in the NCAA.

Despite the good fortune, Hunter adheres to the adage ?I will prepare and some day my chance will come.?

Hunter has been watching McCarron since long before the Michigan native became eligible for the draft. Hunter wanted to land McCarron in that draft but the big man let it be known he wanted to play in the NCAA and with the United States national development team program.

OHL teams usually wait until later rounds to take players in that situation though their potential and talent dictates they should go much higher.

In that 2011draft the Knights got Bo Horvat in the first round, Ian Jenkins, a goaltender who a month later died tragically, Jacob Jammes, Miles Liberati, Remi Elie, Kyle Platzer and Corey Pawley.

The Belleville Bulls beat the Knights to McCarron, taking him as a sixth-round pick.

    McCarron stayed in the States.

?I wanted McCarron but I missed on him,? Hunter said. ?I was really upset, so upset that I missed him that I couldn?t sleep that night.?

But this is where hard work and preparation pay off. Hunter wasn?t about to forget McCarron. In June, 2012 Hunter traded a bunch of draft choices to Belleville for his rights. No guarantees but at least it gave the Knights a chance of getting McCarron to play here.

Hunter says he talked to McCarron before the NHL draft but had no contact with him before he signed with the Canadiens. Hunter did talk to McCarron?s agent though

?I had no idea what he was going to do,? Hunter said. ?I know that you don?t get players that are that big that have good hands, come around every day.

?He?s a piece of the puzzle.?.

In preparation for his role as head coach of the Canadian under-18 team, Knights? coach Dale Hunter has watched films of McCarron with the American team.

?He?s a power forward with soft hands,? said Mark Hunter, ?really soft hands for a big man.?

McCarron doesn?t mind dropping the gloves either.

Big men normally take a longer to develop. Scouts who have watched McCarron say he?s made giant strides in his game.

The Knights could use a big power along the lines of a Tom Wilson with Plymouth or Mark Scheifele of Barrie, a forward that?s difficult for opposing blueliners to handle.

With McCarron?s good hands, he might wind up with permanent residency in front of the opposing net on the power play.

But while there?s excitement at the prospect of a fifth, first-round NHL pick playing for the Knights this year, there?s a need for patience. The OHL is a far different than McCarron is used to. It?s going to take time to get adjusted.

With five first-round picks it would be easy to anoint this team as a team better than the 2011-12 and 2012-13 teams that made the Memorial Cup tournament.

They need the kind of good fortune that helped them out with McCarron.

The last time there was so much anticipation for a season was when the Knights had first pick overall Pat Kane and first-rounder Sam Gagner go to NHL training camp as 18-year-olds.

    Neither of them came back.

Gartner: 2Q PC shipments fell 11 percent

(AP) ? Research firm Gartner says worldwide shipments of personal computers fell for the fifth consecutive quarter, declining 11 percent in the April-June period.

Gartner Inc. said Wednesday that the PC industry is now experiencing the longest decline in its history. The drop comes as people buy fewer PCs and turn to mobile devices such as tablets. Computer makers shipped 76 million PCs in the April-June quarter, down from 85 million in the same period last year.

Lenovo was the No. 1 PC maker, beating out rival Hewlett-Packard Co. by a narrow margin.

Gartner says PC market shipments declined in all regions of the world.
