UK watchdog: Stop recording taxi conversations

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's information watchdog on Wednesday ordered a city council to stop the mandatory recording of people's conversations in taxis, saying the policy breaches the Data Protection act.

Since August 2009, Southampton City Council has required all taxis and private-hire vehicles to install CCTV equipment to constantly record images and the conversations of both drivers and passengers.

Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said Wednesday that the policy was "disproporationate" and that the council had "gone too far" by requiring the recordings.

"We recognize the council's desire to ensure the safety of passengers and drivers, but this has to be balanced against the degree of privacy that most people would reasonably expect in the back of a taxi cab," he said in a statement.

Graham said CCTV cameras can still be used in cabs, but that the compulsory recording of conversations must stop. Southampton, a city with a sea port, is located 75 miles (120 kilometers) southwest of London.

The Information Commission also said that Oxford City Council has suspended plans for a similar policy after the watchdog warned the council's plans would breach the Data Protection Act.

Southampton City Council said it was considering an appeal of the order. Jacqui Rayment, the council's deputy leader, defended the recordings, saying that the data are encrypted and only downloaded if there is a specific complaint against a driver or if police request access to it in order to investigate an alleged offense.

"We are disappointed with this decision as it is about safety for both the drivers and passengers," Rayment said.

Britain has hundreds of thousands of surveillance cameras in public places, including many trains, subways and buses. But Southampton's use of audio recorders in licensed taxi cabs has outraged civil liberty campaigners.

Nick Pickles, director of the civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch, welcomed the decision Wednesday regarding what he called Southampton's "unjustified and intrusive measure."

The Information Commissioner enforces Britain's Data Protection Act and has the power to levy fines or pursue prosecution when laws are broken.

Roma beats Liverpool at Fenway Park

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:16 p.m. ET July 25, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - Michael Bradley and Alessandro Florenzi scored second-half goals, lifting Italy's Roma to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in an exhibition game at Fenway Park on Wednesday night.

Bradley sent a right-footed kick by keeper Brad Jones that caromed into the goal off the left post in the 63rd minute, drawing chants of "USA! USA!" from the crowd of 37,169. He's the son of former U.S. coach Bob Bradley.

Florenzi scored off a rebound from directly in front in the 69th minute - two minutes after entering the game. Charlie Adam scored in the 80th minute for Liverpool.

Liverpool was without captain Steven Gerrard because rules require rest following international tournaments. Luis Saurez (Uruguay) is scheduled to play at the London Olympics and also isn't on the North American tour for Liverpool.

The match was played in the home of the Boston Red Sox, owned by Fenway Sports Group - also the owner of Liverpool.

There was a sea of red in the recently turned 100-year old ballpark, but it wasn't red for the Red Sox. For one night, Fenway was transformed into the home of Liverpool's fans. The usual Red Sox jerseys worn by fans with the names and numbers on the backs reading: "Ortiz 34" and "Pedroia 15" were missing and a number of "Gerrard 8" and "Saurez 7" jerseys filled the park.

The match was dubbed "Football at Fenway 2012" and it had the flavor of one at Anfield. The media meal also was accordingly "fish and chips" - an English staple.

As fans entered the turnstiles at either end of Yawkey Way, a street along the third-base line, they could walk through gates with a sign above that read: "You'll Never Walk Alone," which is a reference to the club's anthem.

About 2 1/2 hours before the start, there were hundreds of red jerseys in the bars and restaurants in the area. They lined up outside the gates about an hour before they opened and carried blankets, scarfs and a few were wearing red wool hats on a bright sunny afternoon with temperatures in the low 80s.

Hanging in the center of the infamous Green Monster was a red and white sign that read: "LFC Tour 2012."

It was the second of a three-game tour for Liverpool, which will face English rival Tottenham on Saturday in Baltimore at the home of the NFL's Ravens. Liverpool earned a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC on Saturday at the Rogers Centre.

John Henry, the controlling partner of Fenway Sports Group, came out of the first-base - or home - dugout about an hour before the start, walked along the outside of the pitch and a few fans immediately recognized him and applauded. He stopped to shake hands as he walked along the right-field warning track toward the foul pole - nicknamed the "Pesky Pole." He watched the match from his private box behind home plate.

In the first half, Liverpool's best chance came when Jon Jo Shelvey's left-footed kick from just inside the box was stopped by keeper Bogdan Lobont in the 41st minute.

Liverpool also had a good chance in the 33rd minute when midfielder Joe Cole lofted one that landed on the top of the net, just over the crossbar.

Roma's Pablo Daniel Osvaldo had an excellent bid in the 8th minute, but goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi made a sliding right arm stop.

NOTES: Liverpool also played without Andy Carroll and Glen Johnson due to the rest rule. ... Liverpool fans draped about 10 signs over the walls behind the right-field bullpens. ... Gulacsi was looking into a bright sun for about the initial eight minutes, with the back of his goal near the edge of the right-field track. ... Jones substituted for Gulacsi at the start of the second half.

Romney and GOP raise $10 million in California over two days

A two-day fundraising swing through California by Mitt Romney brought in $10 million, a sizable addition to the presumptive GOP nominee?s war chest as he prepares for the general election battle with President Obama.

Romney raised the money at seven fundraisers on Sunday and Monday. A campaign source disclosed the amount during a breakfast fundraiser Monday morning at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine.

During the fundraiser and a small-business roundtable in Costa Mesa on Monday, Romney continued to strike a less partisan tone, as he has since the Aurora, Colo., shooting Friday that left 12 people dead and scores injured.

PHOTOS: The search for Romney's running mate

Mentioning the shooting at the fundraiser, Romney said it was ?natural? for Americans to wonder what they or the government could do to prevent such acts.

"The reality is what can we as people do? Our heritage as a nation is that when there are people problems, people respond to them and people solve them," he said, noting that Alexis de Tocqueville said Americans are unique because of "our willingness to serve one another, the barn raisings, if you will."

"We need more barn raisings in America, more people who don't just look and say, 'What can government do?' but instead, 'What things can I do to make a difference in the lives of people near me?'" Romney told about 400 supporters who nibbled on quiche and asparagus.

Romney was introduced by local businessman Frank Kavanaugh, who surprised the crowd by disclosing that in 2008, though he raised money for Romney and supported GOP nominee John McCain, he ultimately voted for Obama, drawn by his message of ?hope and change.?

But "hope is not a strategy and nothing has changed," he said, saying that he supported Romney because of his real-world experience.

Romney responded by telling the crowd it was vital to flip voters who supported Obama four years ago.

?Anyone who voted for John McCain, almost without exception, is planning on voting for me. And the way I win this election is by getting people who voted for Barack Obama to say he didn't live up to their expectations," Romney said. Obama voters from 2008 "are the ones we need. We need to talk to them."
