SUNSET HILLS (KMOV) ? Residents of Sunset Hills gathered Saturday to relfect on the anniversary of the 2010 New Years Eve tornado, which ravished the city.
The city park?s American flag, found among the debris of the winter tornado, was unveiled and will hang along the stairway of the Sunset Hills Community Center.
On December 31, 2010, a strong line of storms raced through the St. Louis Metropolitan area, producing eleven weak tornadoes, and one EF3 strong tornado- which struck the city of Sunset Hills just before noon.
According to the National Weather Service Office in St. Louis, the tornado started in Murphy, Missouri near Delmar Gardens on Arbor Road; it gained strength and followed along eastbound Highway 30, hitting St. Paul Parish and homes within the Forest Knoll Subdivision. The tornado crossed the Meramec River and caused damage to homes on West Watson Road in Sunset Hills. ?
At its peak wind intensity of 150 miles per hour, the EF3 tornado struck Watson Trail Park, uprooting multiple trees and causing extensive damage to several homes on West Watson Road, near Lindbergh Boulevard, and on Court Drive. The SSM Medical Center on Lindbergh suffered severe damage.
The tornado weakened to an EF2 as it made its way northeast of Sunset Hills, eventually dissipating in Crestwood.
Officials say the tornado had a total path of 6.7 miles, and a width of a quarter mile during its peak.
St. Louis Police say one woman died several days later of internal injuries, after her car was slammed into a wall off Highway 141 in Fenton.
