SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A former aide to Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson was arrested Tuesday and charged with multiple felonies for allegedly misusing her city-issued credit card to pay for trips to Disneyland and thousands of dollars in personal expenses.
Lisa Serna-Mayorga was charged with misappropriating public funds, grand theft, forgery and two counts of making or drawing worthless checks. She has been released on $50,000 bail.
Sacramento County prosecutors say Serna-Mayorga charged more than $19,000 worth of personal expenses to the card from July 2009 to June 2012, including trips to Disneyland, restaurant outings and hotel stays in Bodega Bay and Monterey.
She allegedly wrote checks to cover some of the expenses following an investigation into misuse of city credit cards, but did not have funds to cover them and stopped the payments before they could be cashed.
"As I said when this issue came to light last summer, I am saddened by this news," Johnson said Tuesday in a prepared statement. "The City moved swiftly to investigate and also conducted an audit of credit card use citywide.
"As charges have been filed, it would be inappropriate for me or my office to comment on any of the details," Johnson continued. "As the judicial process takes its course, our thoughts are with her family."
Serna-Mayorga, the daughter of former mayor Joe Serna and sister of Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna, served as office manager for the mayor and the City Council from 2008 to 2012.
"I loved my sister before this incident, I love her now, and I will continue to do so as she deals with this," Phil Serna said in a statement late Tuesday.
Serna-Mayorga could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty on all of the charges, prosecutors said.
A call to Serna-Mayorga's home on Wednesday was not immediately returned.
