On August 13, the Jewish community will come together to celebrate the accomplishments of four years of intensive work to grow the quality of nine Denver/Boulder Jewish Early Childhood Education Programs.
The Colorado Jewish ECE Initiative was born in 2007 with the creation of a Steering Committee to guide a long range strategic plan focused on promoting Jewish identity in children and deepening family connections with the Jewish?community, improving the quality in ECE centers, and expanding educational options for families with young children. In 2008 a full-time Early Childhood Specialist position was developed at CAJE to spearhead the Colorado Jewish ECE?Initiative, and in mid-2012 the position evolved into an Early Childhood Education Director position, which Judi Morosohk has held since its inception.
Elements of the program include on-site coaching and mentoring, leadership training, educational seminars, implementation of ?Seamless Judaism? ? integrating Jewish values in meaningful ways into the daily life of ECE?classrooms, contemporary educational approaches such as constructivist early childhood education as demonstrated by the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy and Principles of Excellence, a framework valuing the importance of relationships,?visioning, learning community, shared leadership, and quality environments.
On August 13, Dr. Michael Ben-Avie, a researcher from Yale University?s School of Medicine, will share the findings of his evaluation of the project and which aspects of the work led to the best results. His evaluation reveals the following outcomes of the first four years of work:
- Better teaching in ECE Centers
- Better learning environments for children
- Better integration of Judaism into curricula
- Better connections between families and Jewish life
At the celebration schools will display documentation of their learning through photographs, children?s work and teacher reflection and all centers will be recognized for their accomplishments. Although there is still much work to be done, there is also much to celebrate that has resulted from the combined efforts of directors, educators, families, coaches, and institution leadership.
With the approval of our grant request we look forward to the continued collaboration which ultimately benefits young children and families in our community!
