Christie: Wednesday debate ?the restart? of Romney campaign

While both Democrats and Republicans have downplayed the importance of the first presidential debate in recent days, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie raised the stakes on Sunday, predicting this week's duel in Denver will be a game changer for Mitt Romney.

"Wednesday night's the restart of this campaign," Christie told David Gregory on NBC's "Meet The Press." "Come Thursday morning, the entire narrative of this race is going to change."

Christie dismissed the recent polls that have President Obama leading Romney in nine battleground states.

"You saw the change in those polls happen very quickly," Christie said. "And I'm here to tell you this morning, it can happen very quickly back the other way. And I think the beginning of that is Wednesday night when Governor Romney for the first time gets on the same stage with the president of the United States and people can make a direct comparison about them and their visions for the future.

"You're going to have tens of millions of people for the very first time, David, really tuning in and paying attention to this race," he continued. "And also, for the first time, you're going to have them be able to make a direct, side-by-side comparison. Remember, at the end of the day, campaigns are about the candidates. And they're going to be able to see these two candidates next to each other, debating each other. And Governor Romney I know is going to do a great job on Wednesday night laying out his vision for America's future and making the contrast between he and the president of the United States."

Christie also dismissed criticism of Romney from fellow Republicans.

"Folks like us obsess about this stuff," Christie said. "But I've got to tell you something: The general public that I speak to in New Jersey and elsewhere are just beginning to really tune into this race. And so they're going to start tuning in on Wednesday night, and when they do, Governor Romney's lay out his vision for a better and greater America, for greater opportunity for all of our citizens. And I think that's when you're going to see this race really start to tighten and then move in Governor Romney's direction."

President Obama, Gov. Christie said, is "just trying to run out the clock" in the race for the White House.

"He desperately wants to run out the clock with platitudes which sound nice, and I give him that," Christie said. "The president's very good at that. But in the end, I think that both sides have to look at this campaign and say, 'What are we going to lay out over the next 36 days?' And that's I think what's really important. And I think Governor Romney will lay out some very important points over the next 36 days that are going to make people believe once and for all that America can be great again, not just staggering along here economically as we've been doing."

Looper

Director: Rian Johnson
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt
Running Time: 118 minutes
Rating: R

Imagine flowing through life, day after day inching ever closer to the inevitable?your own death. Sounds familiar right? Well, what if the degree of which was a bit closer than an estimated lifespan and more like a downright certainty. Add some sci-fi, time travel, supernormal telekinetic elements, and enter ? Looper.

If you haven?t heard the name Rian Johnson before, then the name will certainly stick from this day forward. Johnson returns as director for his third and highest-profile film. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a hired gun who takes out people sent from the future to the past to erase them from history?a looper.

Loopers are paid well and enjoy life. However, the catch is that one day somewhere down the line, their future selves are sent back and they ?close the loop? by killing their elder versions.

The balance of time in between is left for them to enjoy their golden-parachute retirement?see the parallel?

\>");

Sounds like an exceptionally interesting and in-depth sci-fi film. But these elements are readily known and understood in the first 5 minutes.

Yes, it gets deeper and more interesting!

As with most sci-fi films, Looper becomes a parallel of life itself.

The critically acclaimed Blade Runner focused on the nature of questioning our own consciousness?the ?Am I a replicant?? paradigm. This became the foundation of mainstream philosophical questions in most sci-fi films over the last 20 to 30 years.

Some allusions to Blade Runner and the most recent ?Runner? of our time, Matrix, can be made. However, if the former was more sci-fi drama, and the latter more sci-fi action, then Looper is certainly more dramatic and more action-oriented.

Director Johnson drives the audience on an emotional and psychological journey through the vehicle of the four central characters: Joe (Gordon-Levitt) the looper, Joe?s elder self (Bruce Willis), Sara (Emily Blunt), Levitt?s present day love interest, and her son Cid (Pierce Gagnon).

The future/elder version of Joe, played by Willis, is left to possibly see the demise of the life he created and lived, and fights to ensure its existence in time.

Sara, the single mother, longs to ensure the safety of her high-functioning, perceptive, and powerful son.

Cid must deal with the nature of the world he lives in, where good and evil are displayed before him at different turns?shaping the destined personality and character he is to become.

And Joe?a selfish, hedonistic, well-dressed, late-20s-something thug?must decide to live his life through an inevitable pace and known outcome or possibly change his own fate.

Sounds clich?d, but Looper is anything but.

Johnson helps to punctuate this element of selfishness that is so pervasive in current times, bring the audience to the proverbial Road Not Taken, and answer the question of what we are willing to sacrifice for our own happiness while balancing the well-being of others.

A thoroughly entertaining sci-fi film with multiple layers, if you catch the hook on this ?loop,? it is sure to be a classic.
