Casper College to explore "Medicare Maze"

CASPER ? Health-care systems run through the government haven't generally been known for their ease of use or transparency. For that reason, Casper College will play host to a discussion on Medicare's open enrollment periods on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The educational event, called "Mastering the Medicare Maze: Managing the Open Enrollment Process," will be offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), a program requiring quarterly membership for those aged 50 and beyond who want to continue their education for personal enjoyment.

"We have discovered that many seniors out there are not sure how the upcoming Medicare open enrollment really works," said Vicki Pollock, lifelong learning specialist at Casper College in a release. The so-called "open enrollment period" runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

"During that time, anyone on Medicare can join or change their 2013 Medicare Part D prescription drug plan," Pollock said. "We hope to help alleviate some of the stress to seniors who may be struggling to figure out all of the options available to them with this presentation."

The program will be presented by Terry Bay, founder and owner of Senior Patient Advocates. Pollock said those in attendance will "learn how to successfully navigate the maze of drug plan options, identify costs and benefit differences between the plans and maximize their Medicare benefits for 2013."?

Attendees must register for the event, including fall membership into OLLI. Membership for fall programs, lasting from now to Dec. 13, is $35 and comes with two complimentary classes, of which the otherwise $15 "Medicare Maze" class qualifies. A full schedule of programs is available here. For more information or to register, contact Pollock at 268-2097 or Karen Arnold, lifelong learning specialist, at 268-2099.
