Total Recall: Movies About Video Games

Christopher Kulik

I have to say, when the first movie popped up as CLOAK & DAGGER, it made me swoon with nostalgia. What's really odd is I'm not, never was, and never will be, a gamer, yet this was my introduction to that world; I didn't see WARGAMES until years, years later. CLOAK & DAGGER is seriously underrated, as it was interesting hybrid of the old script "The Window" and (then-new) 1980s video game technology, while also being a precursor to the SPY KIDS films. Dabney Coleman is awesome and badass as both Henry Thomas' dad and his adult fantasy sidekick Jack Flack. I love it when Thomas is in a jam and phones his girlfriend in a parked car, and Jack quips in the back seat, "Come on, we gotta get outta here and find some weapons!" Then, Thomas actually drives--and consequently smashes--the car out of the garage as the owner, a dangerous spy, is pursuing him. The spy's secondary aims his gun and the spy yells, "Don't shoot at my car, what are you crazy?!?" Jack Flack always escapes...classic!

The only one on this list I haven't seen is the Bollywood one, not exactly a genre I've jumped into yet. For some reason, I found EXISTENZ excruciatingly boring and stupid, but I loved THE KING OF KONG (I believe there is an actual movie version about the rivalry coming soon), THE LAST STARFIGHTER (another '80s sci-fi classic; not one of my favorites, but I respect it), WARGAMES and SCOTT PILGRIM. TRON isn't a favorite but I get it, it's a cool film. Oh, and I remember THE WIZARD all too well: during the final game competition, I was beginning to fall asleep as I was so unexcited. Speaking as probably the only 1980s kid who didn't own an original Nintendo system, yet had played it Super Mario/Duck Hunt when it came out, and THE WIZARD never compelled me to ask for it as a Christmas gift. Call me depraved or whatever; it's just never been my thing.
